The Volksfest of the High Black Forest — three days between Oktoberfest band and star march
The Städtlifest in Todtnau is the largest Volksfest in the Hochschwarzwald (High Black Forest) and has been celebrated every year on the first weekend of July since 1977. In 2026, the 49th edition will take place from July 3 to 5 in Todtnau's town center — in the Lörrach district (state of Baden-Württemberg), at the foot of the Feldberg at an altitude of 660 meters.
The musical highlight is the Oktoberfest band "Münchner Zwietracht" — one of Bavaria's best-known party bands, which gets the festival tent rocking with brass music, pop, and rock classics. The program is complemented by the traditional Sternenmarsch (star march) of all Todtnau music bands: the local clubs march from the various districts in a star pattern to the market square, where they unite to form one large band — a moving spectacle of collective club culture.
Craftsmen and artisans set up their stalls in the market square and the alleys of Todtnau's old town — from Black Forest wood carvings, glassblowers, and potters to beekeepers, distillers, and cheesemakers from the region. The local clubs cater to guests with South Baden specialties: sausage platters, Schäufele (pork shoulder), Flammkuchen (tarte flambée), Black Forest ham, Bibliskäs (cheese spread) with bread, accompanied by Tannenzäpfle, Rothaus, and Markgräfler wines. Food trucks add modern street food options.
The grand finale on Sunday evening at 10:30 PM is the big anniversary fireworks display over the Black Forest — a pyrotechnic spectacle that bathes the mountain silhouette, with its alternation of forests, meadows, and rock formations, in colorful light. The view of the fireworks from Todtnau's town center is legendary.
Todtnau (around 4,700 inhabitants) is located in the southernmost High Black Forest, nestled between Belchen, Feldberg, and the Rhine Valley. The mountain town is famous for its waterfall (Todtnauer Wasserfall, 97 m, one of Germany's highest), the Hasenhorn ski area, and its location on the Hochschwarzwaldstraße. In summer, Todtnau is a central starting point for hiking and mountain biking tours. The Städtlifest combines sporting summer mountain tradition with cozy South Baden festival culture.
From July 3 to 5, 2026, Todtnau will transform for the 49th time into a South Baden festival stage. The Städtlifest offers three days of festival tent fun with Münchner Zwietracht, the star march of the Todtnau music bands, an arts and crafts market, catering by local clubs, complemented by food trucks, and crowned by the traditional fireworks on Sunday evening at 10:30 PM.
You can reach Todtnau via the B317 from the Markgräflerland (Lörrach/Schopfheim) or via the B500 from Feldberg. By train, take the Wiesentalbahn S6 from Basel/Lörrach to Schopfheim, then bus 7300 to Todtnau. Parking is available around the town center; use the Hasenhorn ski area parking as an alternative.
Friday, July 3 to Sunday, July 5, 2026. Fireworks Sunday evening at 10:30 PM.
Free admission.
Combine your visit to the festival with the Todtnauer Waterfall or a mountain hike to Feldberg/Belchen — Todtnau is an ideal base for the southern High Black Forest.
