Opening of the Castle Season – Bird of Prey Show, Marksmen's Salute, Crafts Market
When the castle gates open on the third weekend in March, the new season begins for Kronberg Castle. The Spring Festival is its festive opening – a weekend with historical allusions, family activities, and a crafts market. The organizer is the Kronberg Castle Foundation in the Taunus, a private initiative that has restored the medieval castle and now manages it for the public.
The festive opening traditionally begins with salute shots from the Cronberg Marksmen – a historical reference to the town's marksmen's guild and the castle's warlike past. It is not loud or aggressive, but a ceremonial spectacle with traditional costumes, muzzle-loaders, and a solemn ritual.
A highlight is the bird of prey show with falconer Christian Wick: eagles, buzzards, falcons, and owls fly before the audience, while Wick explains the animals and their hunting behavior. Further program items:
Children can paint at the castle, decorate eggs (Easter/spring-themed), go on donkey rides, do crafts, and experience traditions. For adults, the castle's interior – residential floors, hall, and chapel – are open for guided tours.
In the castle courtyard, stalls offer handicrafts, castle jams, wild plant products, herbs, and decorative and gift items. Food and drink: sausages, pretzels, waffles, beverages – classic castle festival fare.
On Sunday, the shops in Kronberg's town center are open from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. (Sunday shopping). Those who want to stroll through the town after the castle festival can combine it with shopping.
Kronberg Castle towers over the old town of Kronberg in the Taunus – one of Germany's wealthiest towns, nestled in the Hochtaunus mountains and only 20 kilometers from Frankfurt. The medieval castle is one of the best-preserved castles in the Hochtaunus and today houses the museum, a small gallery, and an event center.
