Spring Awakening in Tangerhütte City Park

The Park Awakens — and with it the Season

When April warms up in the Altmark and the first tulips bloom, the season traditionally opens in Tangerhütte City Park — with the Spring Awakening. This is not a mega-event, but a small, charming spring festival that combines the atmosphere of an English country park with the civic culture of the northern Altmark. The setting is the historic park around the New Palace Tangerhütte, one of the 50 Gartenträume Parks in Saxony-Anhalt — that statewide network of the most beautiful historic gardens and parks.

The park was laid out in the 19th century — during the heyday of the English landscape garden style. Gentle meadows, old oaks, lindens, and beeches, small paths, a pond. At the center is the New Palace, a Neo-Gothic building once built by the ironworks owners — for Tangerhütte owes its name to an iron foundry ("Tanger-Hütte") that made the town economically prosperous in the 19th century. Today, the palace is restored, and the park grounds are one of the most beautiful places for a stroll in the Altmark.

The Spring Awakening follows a program refined over the years: From 10 AM, the Remise at the New Palace opens — a lovingly restored part of the outbuildings, serving as an event venue. Here, there will be a small opening speech by the local history association, information about the upcoming events of the season (from May to October, concerts, readings, and summer festivals take place in the park), as well as park tours with the local history association. From 2 PM, the coffee and cake café opens in the Remise — managed by the association Kinderstärken e.V., which supports projects for children and young people in the region with the proceeds.

The highlight is the jazz concert starting at 3 PM on the coffee meadow behind the palace. In 2026, the Magdeburg Jazz Band "4Steps" with Mohi Buschendorf will perform here — a nice tradition to open the park season with jazz. In recent years, other local musicians have also been guests, sometimes the "Alltagspoeten" (Friedrich & Wiesenhütter), who play songs between the singer-songwriter and folk tradition with accordion and guitar.

Garden Culture in the Altmark

Tangerhütte is the seat of the municipality of the same name in the Stendal district, state of Saxony-Anhalt. The town — just under 5,000 inhabitants — is small, but the park is of supra-regional cultural significance. As part of the Gartenträume Park Program, the city park is maintained and developed; the annual event program includes concerts, the "Rendezvous in the Gartenträume Park" (Jazz in June), summer festivals, picnic days with folk music, and finally the Harvest Festival in October. The Spring Awakening is the ideal introduction to the park year.
