Traditional charcoal-making in the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide — Kiln in the forest near Dolle
Before coal and coke powered German industry, charcoal was the most important fuel for smithies, smelters, and glassblowers. It was produced by charcoal burners in kilns (Meiler): artfully stacked piles of wood that carbonized for weeks under a clay and earth cover, without a flame. This craft has almost disappeared today — the tradition is only maintained in a few places in Germany. One of them is Dolle, a district of the municipality of Colbitz in the Börde district.
Every year, the Heimatverein Dolle builds a kiln in the forest near Dolle, ignites it, and manages the multi-day charcoal-making process — a task requiring patience that draws on all the knowledge of the old charcoal burners. Around the kiln ignition, the annual Köhlerfest takes place: a family festival that combines tradition, forest, and conviviality. Barbecue specialties directly at the kiln, music, a bit of local history — and the spectacle of smoking charcoal.
The Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide is a large heathland area in the north of Saxony-Anhalt, northeast of Magdeburg. For centuries, it was an important area for wood and charcoal production — a function that now only lives on in memories. Dolle is one of the typical heath villages on the western edge of the Letzlinger Heide. The Köhlerfest is one of the events that keeps the identity of the heath visible.
According to the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide Tourism Association, the Köhlerfest is firmly planned for 2026 — presumably in June, about two weeks after Pentecost. The exact date will be announced in spring 2026 when the Heimatverein Dolle sets the dates for building the kiln (ignition must match the right weather). In 2025, the festival took place on June 14th.
The festive weekend revolves around the commissioning of the kiln: In the days leading up to it, the Heimatverein Dolle stacks the wood, and on the Saturday of the festival, the kiln is ignited — from then on, the wood continues to carbonize for days. You will experience the traditional charcoal-making craft up close, with barbecues, music, and conversations with the members of the heritage association.
