About SAARathon

In October, the banks of the Saar in Saarbrücken become the largest running course in Saarland: The Sparkassen-SAARathon combines Marathon, Half Marathon, 10-km Westspangenlauf, a 5-km run for everyone, and a Kids Run on a single autumn Sunday. Start and finish in the Kulturbiergarten Saarbrücken-St. Arnual, a fast, flat course directly on the banks of the Saar with fantastic city views — the SAARathon is the most traditional running event in the state capital, and also hosts the Saarland Marathon Championships.

The Westspangenlauf — Saarland's Running Tradition since 1988

At its core is the Westspangenlauf, one of Saarland's most traditional popular runs, which will see its 38th edition in 2026. The current SAARathon has evolved from this tradition — a modern, complete running event with distances for all levels. Sparkasse Saarbrücken has been the main sponsor and namesake for years. The organizer is Westspangenlauf e.V., which brings the event to life every year with a high level of volunteer commitment.

Five Distances, One Course

What makes the SAARathon special is its variety: From the 1 km Kids Run for the youngest athletes, to the 5-km Run for everyone, the traditional 10-km Westspangenlauf, the Half Marathon (21.1 km), and the full Marathon (42.195 km) — five distances on the same day. Everyone can find their run, everyone can find their pace. The Marathon includes the Saarland State Championships — an attraction for ambitious runners from all over the state.

Course Directly on the Banks of the Saar

The course runs directly along the banks of the Saar — flat, fast, well-paved. For those who can enjoy the views while running: this is possible here. Views across the Saar to Saarbrücken Castle, towards the Burbach Saar arm, and the industrial history of the region. Refreshment stations every 5 km, sanitary facilities, professional timing. Start and finish are both in the Kulturbiergarten Saarbrücken-St. Arnual — the perfect meeting point before and after the run.

Fees and Registration

Sparkasse deliberately keeps prices attractive: Marathon early birds until January 31, 2026, pay only €30, late registrants until September 27, 2026, pay €45. The Half Marathon costs €15–€24, shorter distances accordingly less. Registration exclusively online via saarathon-2026.racepedia.de. On-site registration is not possible.

Start Packages and Logistics

Start packages will be handed out on Saturday, October 10, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Kulturbiergarten, or on Sunday, October 11, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. directly before the run. Those traveling from afar can book accommodation in Saarbrücken (numerous hotels) or in neighboring France.

Saarbrücken — The City of Short Distances

With just under 180,000 inhabitants, Saarbrücken is by far the largest city in Saarland and the state capital. With a compact city center, good rail connections (ICE/TGV), and the Saar as a central axis, the city is perfectly designed for sports events. The SAARathon makes optimal use of these qualities — quick arrival and departure, short distances to the start, a relaxed conclusion in the St. Arnual district.

SAARathon — edition 2026

The Sparkassen-SAARathon 2026 will take place on Sunday, October 11, 2026, in Saarbrücken. Marathon, Half Marathon, 10-km Westspangenlauf, 5-km Run, and Kids Run — five distances in one day, all along the banks of the Saar with start and finish in the Kulturbiergarten St. Arnual. The Marathon includes the Saarland Marathon Championships.

As in previous years, the SAARathon offers the full spectrum of distances — from the Kids Run for children to the classic Marathon. The flat, fast course along the Saar is perfect for personal bests, which is why the SAARathon attracts ambitious runners from Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, Luxembourg, and neighboring France every year.
