About Filmhaus Open Air

In July and August, the Filmhaus Saarbrücken transforms its courtyard into an open-air cinema: on Friday and Saturday evenings, arthouse films, premieres, and classics are shown under the open sky. With admission from 9:00 PM and film start at 10:00 PM, the summer format of the Saarbrücken art-house cinema offers a relaxed alternative to the classic indoor cinema – an urban cultural classic of the Saarland state capital.

The Filmhaus as a Cultural Address

The Filmhaus Saarbrücken at Mainzer Straße 8 has been the central address for arthouse and independent cinema in the Saarland state capital for decades. Unlike commercial multiplex cinemas, the Filmhaus curates its program – with a focus on European auteur films, documentaries, film series on socio-political topics, and premieres by Saarland filmmakers. The open-air cinema in summer is one of its most popular program points.

Courtyard as a Summer Stage

The Open-Air Cinema takes place in the courtyard of the Filmhaus – a surprisingly quiet space in the middle of Saarbrücken's city center. The high building facades create natural acoustics, and the lighting conditions only allow screenings after dark. Admission is therefore at 9:00 PM, and the film starts at 10:00 PM.

Friday and Saturday Evenings

The event runs on several weekends in July and August, every Friday and Saturday evening. The program is a mix of current arthouse films, classics, film art premieres, and repertoire highlights. Exact film titles and dates will be announced in early summer on filmhaus-sb.de and via the Filmhaus newsletters.

Saarbrücken Summer Culture

Saarbrücken has a dense open-air cultural program in the summer: the Perspectives theater festival, concerts at Tbilisser Platz, the Altstadtfest, and the Filmhaus cinema together form a series that perfectly captures the Saar capital's cultural offerings during the warm months. Anyone who wants to spend a relaxed summer evening with sophisticated film will find one of their favorite spots in the Filmhaus courtyard.

Weather Contingency

As with all open-air cinemas: in case of rain, the screening will be moved to the Filmhaus auditorium or postponed. Current weather updates via the Filmhaus newsletter and social media channels.

Filmhaus Open Air — edition 2026

The Filmhaus Open-Air Cinema will run again in 2026 over several weekends in July and August. Every Friday and Saturday evening in the courtyard. Admission 9:00 PM, film start 10:00 PM.

The exact program – i.e., which films will be shown on which weekends – is usually announced by Filmhaus Saarbrücken in early summer 2026. The proven format remains: Friday and Saturday evenings with current arthouse films, film premieres, or thematic classic series.

Programme Filmhaus Open Air 2026

The exact dates and film titles for 2026 will be announced in early summer on filmhaus-sb.de. The format remains: Friday and Saturday evenings, admission 9:00 PM, film start 10:00 PM after dark. In case of rain, relocation to the auditorium or postponement.
