Summer cinema under the stars in the courtyard of the Filmhaus Saarbrücken
The Filmhaus Saarbrücken at Mainzer Straße 8 has been the central address for arthouse and independent cinema in the Saarland state capital for decades. Unlike commercial multiplex cinemas, the Filmhaus curates its program – with a focus on European auteur films, documentaries, film series on socio-political topics, and premieres by Saarland filmmakers. The open-air cinema in summer is one of its most popular program points.
The Open-Air Cinema takes place in the courtyard of the Filmhaus – a surprisingly quiet space in the middle of Saarbrücken's city center. The high building facades create natural acoustics, and the lighting conditions only allow screenings after dark. Admission is therefore at 9:00 PM, and the film starts at 10:00 PM.
The event runs on several weekends in July and August, every Friday and Saturday evening. The program is a mix of current arthouse films, classics, film art premieres, and repertoire highlights. Exact film titles and dates will be announced in early summer on filmhaus-sb.de and via the Filmhaus newsletters.
Saarbrücken has a dense open-air cultural program in the summer: the Perspectives theater festival, concerts at Tbilisser Platz, the Altstadtfest, and the Filmhaus cinema together form a series that perfectly captures the Saar capital's cultural offerings during the warm months. Anyone who wants to spend a relaxed summer evening with sophisticated film will find one of their favorite spots in the Filmhaus courtyard.
As with all open-air cinemas: in case of rain, the screening will be moved to the Filmhaus auditorium or postponed. Current weather updates via the Filmhaus newsletter and social media channels.
The exact program – i.e., which films will be shown on which weekends – is usually announced by Filmhaus Saarbrücken in early summer 2026. The proven format remains: Friday and Saturday evenings with current arthouse films, film premieres, or thematic classic series.
