Socially critical film festival for schools, trainees, and young people at kino achteinhalb
The AK Film Days Saarbrücken are not a classic film festival with red-carpet glamour, but a politically and socially committed educational format. The organizer is the Saarland Chamber of Labour (Arbeitskammer des Saarlandes), the representative body for employees in Saarland. The focus is on current feature films and documentaries from Germany, France, and the Greater Region that address socially relevant issues.
Unlike commercial festivals, the AK Film Days primarily target school classes, trainees, and youth groups. The morning screenings at 8:30 AM and 11:30 AM are free and are accompanied by educational materials and film discussions with directors or experts. Schools and educational institutions must register their classes online in advance.
For the general public, the evening screenings at 7 PM are accessible for a small admission fee of €5 – a deliberate low-threshold approach that makes the films accessible to audiences who may not be able to afford higher prices. Discussions with invited guests take place after the screenings.
The 18th edition is under the motto “Perceive. Change. Stick Together.” and is dedicated to the question of how young people with a migration background are perceived in society in Germany and France and what realities of life they experience. Five films cover migration, racism, social division, and opportunities for cohesion.
The venue is the kino achteinhalb at Nauwieserstraße 1 in Saarbrücken — the art-house cinema in Saarbrücken's city centre, which also shows sophisticated films beyond the multiplex mainstream in its daily programme. The auditorium seats around 80 people, making the film discussions personal and intense.
