freDOlino — Dortmund's Easter Fair
The freDOlino Osterkirmes has been a spring ritual in Dortmund North for decades. On the sprawling Fredenbaumplatz, from March 28 to April 12, 2026, you'll find everything that makes a modern big city fair: a Ferris wheel with views of the Ruhr area panorama, a haunted house, a log flume, bumper cars, Break Dancer, and several family areas for the little ones.
Tradition Meets Fairground Atmosphere
Just in time for Easter, the Osterkirmes brings the first major amusement kick-off to the region after the grey winter months. Family days with reduced prices, traditional showman specialties (potato pancakes, almonds, gingerbread hearts), and a fireworks display to conclude on April 12 are firmly part of the program. The name freDOlino is a play on words from Fredenbaumplatz, DO (Dortmund's license plate code), and the Italian ending -ino — a tribute to the migration history of the Ruhr area.
Fredenbaumplatz — The Festival Site in Dortmund North
The Fredenbaumplatz in the Dortmund-Nord district is located on the edge of Fredenbaum Park, one of Dortmund's oldest city parks. With an area of around 100,000 m², it is one of the largest festival sites in North Rhine-Westphalia and also hosts the autumn fair and the May fair. Its own subway station (Fredenbaum, U41) takes visitors directly from the main station to the grounds in 10 minutes.
Volksfeste in the Ruhr Area — Identity in Transition
The tradition of large fairs is deeply rooted in the Ruhr area — as an expression of the folk culture of a former industrial region. Cranger Kirmes in Herne, Rheinkirmes in Düsseldorf, Liboriusfest in Paderborn, and indeed the Dortmund Kirmesse form the folk festival calendar of North Rhine-Westphalia. The freDOlino, as the "spring kick-off," is an integral part of this series.
Family Program and Showman Variety
More than 100 showman businesses from all over Germany are on site over the two weeks. In addition to the classic fairground attractions, there are special family days (often Tuesdays) with reduced prices, a children's area with carousels for the little ones, and a selection of live music in the beer tents.
