Choir singing under the open sky at the Spandau Citadel
The open-air stage at the Spandau Citadel, nestled within the walls of the Renaissance fortress by the Juliusturm, is the natural meeting point for Spandau's cultural scene in the summer. Once a year, for a morning, it belongs to the district's choirs: the Spandauer Liedertag.
From traditional men's choirs to young pop choirs, from church music ensembles to female a cappella quartets – the Spandau choirs use the Liedertag to showcase to each other and their audience what's happening chorally in the district. The program is deliberately broad: folk songs, classical works of choral literature, sing-along pop songs, and sacred music alternate.
The Liedertag is part of the Citadel's summer series "Umsonst & Draußen", which for years has offered local bands, orchestras, ensembles, and choirs from Spandau and all of Berlin free performance opportunities under the open sky. The series is organized by the Kulturhaus Spandau, the district's central municipal organizer.
The westernmost district of Berlin has preserved its own cityscape: a medieval old town, a 16th-century citadel, industrial history, and since the 1990s, a vibrant choral scene with over two dozen active choirs. The Liedertag is therefore more than just a concert – it's a gathering of an entire community on a friendly morning.
The date on Pentecost Sunday, June 7, 2026, is traditionally chosen to coincide with good Pentecost weather, allowing the open-air format to shine. The event starts at 11:00 AM and ends around 2:00 PM.
The final list of choirs will be published by Kulturhaus Spandau in early May 2026. Typical participants in past years included the Popchor Spandau, church ensembles, men's singing societies, and a cappella formations from the Spandau semicircle.
Between performances, there will be short introductions about the history of the pieces and the choirs themselves – this makes the Liedertag easily accessible even for listeners without prior choral experience.
The exact list of choirs and their contributions will be published shortly before the date. Current information: berlin.de and kulturhaus-spandau.de.
