Three weeks of encounters, play, and creativity in the Dudweiler pedestrian zone
Dudweiler, with around 18,000 inhabitants, is the largest district of Saarbrücken – almost a small town in itself. The historic pedestrian zone has been characterized by structural change and difficult retail conditions in recent years. With the Sommerstraßen, the state capital is banking on a new concept: temporary traffic calming as urban activation.
During the three-week period, the Dudweiler pedestrian zone is consistently understood as a public space for lingering, no longer as a thoroughfare:
The association Pro Dorf Dudweiler e.V., a committed civic initiative for district development, plays a central role. Together with the Saarbrücken Cultural Office, the association supports the program, organizes events, and coordinates participatory activities.
The concept is inspired by similar formats in European metropolises – comparable Sommerstraßen programs exist in Paris (Paris Plages), Vienna (Wiener Sommerstraßen), or Amsterdam. Saarbrücken is adapting the format for its largest district, experimenting with the relationship between traffic and public space.
A three-week duration (June 23 – July 12, 2026) makes the Sommerstraßen the longest district festival in Saarland. It is not a classic Volksfest (public festival), but a continuous format with small, regular events – similar to how a living urban space functions. People living in Saarbrücken will visit the Sommerstraße multiple times, rather than attending a single festival.
The program will be determined in the weeks before the start of the Sommerstraßen through an open call for expressions of interest: associations, artists, cultural practitioners, and initiatives can submit their contributions by December 2025. This will form the basis for the specific event calendar, which will be published on the city's website from spring 2026.
The exact daily programs will be published in spring 2026 at saarbruecken.de/sommerstrassen and in the Dudweiler district media.
Typical program elements:
