A summery wine festival in the vineyards of the Steigerwald near Prüßberg
The Fränkisches Sommernachtsmärchen is one of the most atmospheric wine festivals in the Franconian Steigerwald. Instead of being held in the village center, it takes place directly in the vineyards above Michelau im Steigerwald – specifically in the vineyard area above the Prüßberg district. The organizer is the Weinbauverein Michelau-Altmannsdorf, which has cultivated this format for years, directly combining Franconian wine culture and summer nights.
The focus is on Michelau wines – Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, and other grape varieties that grow on the sun-drenched slopes of the Steigerwald. They are served directly among the vines, often as open wine in a Bocksbeutel bottle or by the glass (Schoppen). Accompanied by Franconian snacks (Brotzeit) and small warm dishes from the region.
Both evenings feature live music under the open sky, along with classic elements of a Franconian wine festival: a guided torchlight hike with wine tasting through the evening vineyards, followed by a cozy Dämmerschoppen (evening drink) with a view over the gentle hilly landscape. When the sun disappears behind the vines, torches illuminate the vineyard – hence the name Sommernachtsmärchen (Summer Night's Fairytale).
Michelau im Steigerwald is located in the Schweinfurt district in Franconian Lower Franconia (Bavaria) and belongs to the Franconian wine region. The municipality consists of five districts, including Altmannsdorf, Prüßberg, Hundelshausen, Neuhausen, and Sudrach. It is situated in the middle of the Steigerwald Nature Park, one of Franconia's most beautiful wine landscapes. Visitors to the Sommernachtsmärchen can use the days before or after for hikes through the nature park, wine tastings at surrounding wineries, and excursions to Iphofen, Volkach, or Schweinfurt.
In 2026, the Michelau-Altmannsdorf winegrowers' association once again invites you to its vineyards above Prüßberg. For two evenings, Franconian wine culture, summer nights, and live music combine to create one of the most beautiful dates on the Steigerwald wine calendar.
The program includes Franconian wines by the glass (Schoppen) or in Bocksbeutel bottles, accompanied by snacks (Brotzeit) and small warm dishes from the region. A guided torchlight hike with wine tasting leads through the evening vineyards, after which the evening concludes with live music during the Dämmerschoppen as torches illuminate the vines.
By car via the A3 (Wiesentheid exit), continue on the Staatsstraße to Michelau im Steigerwald, then to the Prüßberg district. Parking is available near the village, then walk to the vineyards (short uphill climb). Sturdy footwear recommended due to vineyard paths.
Free admission to the event in the vineyards. Wine sales at usual market prices directly from the vintner, snacks and small dishes available on site. Cash recommended.
The best atmosphere is from late afternoon into dusk. Pack a blanket or light jacket for the evening. Usually ends after midnight. In case of rain, inquire about the contingency plan at the winegrowers' association.
