Herne, with around 156,000 inhabitants, is an independent city in the Ruhr area (Arnsberg administrative district), located between Bochum, Gelsenkirchen, and Recklinghausen. Characterized by its mining and industrial history and a vibrant club scene — over 1,500 clubs are active in Herne. The Tierschutzverein Herne-Wanne e.V. with its animal shelter at Hofstraße 51 is one of the most important animal welfare organizations in the western Ruhr area.

Tierschutzverein Herne-Wanne e.V.

The animal welfare association operates the Tierheim Herne-Wanne at Hofstraße 51 (Eickel district) and cares for dogs, cats, small animals, and occasionally birds or reptiles. The animal shelter is a central point of contact for abandoned, surrendered, or stray animals from Herne and the surrounding area. Rehoming, basic veterinary care, and nursing are the main tasks — financed by membership fees, donations, and proceeds from events like the summer festival.

Summer Festival Concept — Accessible and Animal-Focused

The annual summer festival is the association's most important fundraising event. Over two days on the first weekend of July, the animal shelter grounds transform into a marketplace with food and drink stands, a flea market, a raffle, and sales booths for shelter-own merchandise. Visitors come because they:

• can visit the animals in the shelter (dog runs, cat rooms)
• receive adoption advice
• can speak directly with animal caretakers and veterinarians
• support the association through purchases and donations
• enjoy a cozy weekend lunch

The entire proceeds go directly to the shelter animals — for food, veterinary care, stable maintenance, and supplies.

Program 2026

On July 4th and 5th, 2026, the program runs from 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM each day:

• Sales Stands — Shelter merchandise, toys, books, small gifts
• Flea Market — donated items with proceeds to the animal shelter
• Raffle — tickets €1-2 each, prizes from local donations and sponsors
• Grill — sausages, steaks, vegan alternatives
• Coffee and Cake — homemade donations from association members
• Waffles — the summer festival classics
• Vegan Options — an important expansion in recent years, fitting the animal welfare mission
• Adoption Advice — caretakers show animals and advise interested parties
• Children's Program — face painting, games

The summer festival is just one of several annual animal shelter events. In 2026, the animal welfare association also plans:
