Family summer festival at the fire station in Hamburg-Duvenstedt with demonstrations, orchestra, and children's program
The Sommerfest of the Duvenstedt Volunteer Fire Brigade is one of those unspectacular but deeply rooted neighborhood festivals that hold the social fabric of Hamburg's Walddörfer together. Once a year, traditionally on a Saturday in June, the brigade invites the public to its fire station at Poppenbütteler Chaussee 17 – the gates are open, the hoses are demonstrated, the beer is tapped.
The highlight is usually the fat explosion: What happens when you pour water on burning fat? The answer is an impressive, controlled flash fire – and a year's worth of visual education in ten seconds. In addition, the active members demonstrate technical rescue exercises (accident simulation with rescue shears), first aid demonstrations, and the youth fire brigade trains in front of an audience. A demonstration by the rescue dog unit rounds off the program.
Musically, the Duvenstedt Orchestra provides the atmosphere. For children, there's a large bouncy castle, fresh fries, and cotton candy. Adults can enjoy grilled food from the barbecue, cake and coffee in the afternoon, and drinks from the festival tent. Admission is free; the festival is financed through food and drink sales.
Duvenstedt is a small district in the far north of the Wandsbek borough, at the very edge of the city – the border with Schleswig-Holstein is right on its doorstep. With just under 6,000 inhabitants, the district has a distinctly village-like character; the volunteer fire brigade here is not only an emergency organization but also a social hub. The Sommerfest is – alongside the church community's Christmas bazaar – one of the two most important social events on the district calendar in the state of Hamburg.
The Sommerfest has been a firm fixture on the Duvenstedt district calendar for years – the 2026 edition can therefore be considered confirmed, even though the date has not yet been publicly announced at the time of research. Based on experience, those responsible usually choose a Saturday in June that does not conflict with major Hamburg sporting events or the start of school holidays.
The program also tends to remain stable: demonstrations of fire protection and technical rescue, participation of the youth fire brigade, performance by the Duvenstedt Orchestra, bouncy castle, fries, cotton candy, barbecue station, and a festival tent with drinks. Admission remains free.
The exact daily program for 2026 will be published shortly before the event. Based on experience, it will follow this schedule:
