Osterfeuer – Ancient Spring Ritual
Osterfeuer have a long tradition in Northern Germany, originating from pre-Christian spring bonfires that were reinterpreted in the Middle Ages as a symbol of resurrection. They are traditionally lit on Holy Saturday or Easter Sunday and are considered an important meeting point for the village community in spring in many places in Schleswig-Holstein.
Tangstedt in the District of Stormarn
The municipality of Tangstedt in the district of Stormarn is located northeast of Hamburg, directly on the border with Schleswig-Holstein. It is not to be confused with the similarly named Tangstedt in the district of Pinneberg. Tangstedt in Stormarn has a reputation among its neighboring municipalities for hosting one of the best-organized Osterfeuer in the region – supported by the commitment of the Volunteer Fire Department.
The Volunteer Fire Department as Organizer
The FF Tangstedt builds the Osterfeuer from pruned branches collected by the municipality and its citizens. On Holy Saturday, from 6:00 PM onwards, the fire is lit. Around the fire, the fire department sets up food stands: sausages, hot drinks (mulled wine in spring, cocoa, tea), cold drinks, and snacks for children.
Character and Atmosphere
As with many Northern German Osterfeuer, the atmosphere is a special mix of the beginning of spring and traditional community spirit: families come with children, former villagers visit their hometown, and village ties are maintained. Those who want to understand the character of the Osterfeuer should look not at the fire itself, but at what surrounds it: the encounters, the shared anticipation of the sparks flying, the children baking stick bread over the dying embers.
