Town festival with boat parade and fireworks display on the Bleiloch Reservoir — the Thuringian Sea
The Bleiloch Reservoir, with an area of around 215 hectares and a length of 28 kilometers, is Germany's largest reservoir — it dams the Saale River over a stretch that creates almost its own Central European watersports landscape. Locals affectionately call it the «Thuringian Sea». Saalburg-Ebersdorf is located on the west bank and, with its boat harbor, ship landing stage, and several beach areas, is the central tourist hub of the region. The Summer and Light Festival consistently utilizes this water landscape: the water is not a backdrop, but the main protagonist.
The clear highlight of the festival is the water component. The boat parade starts in the late afternoon: private, club, and tourist boats are decorated with fairy lights and lanterns and move in a procession across the lake — past the festival bank, past the harbor, then back. It is a pure scenic production — photogenic, almost kitschy, romantic in the best sense. Anyone who owns a boat can register in advance and participate in the parade.
The absolute highlight is the fireworks display around 10:30 PM. Fired from the water, the fireworks are reflected in the calm lake — a double light show, high in the sky and down in the mirror of the water. This is the «Light» component that gives the festival its name: as the fireworks rockets ascend, the lanterns of the parade boats, the fairy lights of the catering stands, and the lanterns along the beach promenade all glow — the lake becomes a sea of light.
During the day, the festival is a classic town festival with a family atmosphere. The festival grounds open at 12:00 PM. Competition games between the districts (1:00 PM–4:00 PM) — Saalburg, Ebersdorf, Mödlareuth, Heinersdorf — run under the motto of a village olympiad day and foster local identity. Puppet theatre for children, several live bands on different stages (folk music, cover bands, solo artists), passenger boat trips on the lake with the regular ferries, and a family program with a bouncy castle, carousel, and small rides in the beach area. Catering stands run by local clubs line the beach promenade.
Saalburg-Ebersdorf is located in the Saale-Orla district in the state of Thuringia, in the south of the state on the border with Bavaria (Franconian Forest). The municipality was formed in 2018 from the merger of the previously independent towns of Saalburg and Ebersdorf. With its beach hotel, several campsites, and boat rentals, it is the most important tourist destination on the Bleiloch Reservoir. Visitors to the Summer and Light Festival can easily spend a weekend there — the lake offers watersports, hiking, fishing, and swimming areas. The nearby Mödlareuth («Little Berlin», a divided village during the GDR era, now an open-air museum) is also a worthwhile addition.
On July 4, 2026, the town of Saalburg-Ebersdorf will open the festival grounds at the Bleiloch Reservoir. Festival activities will run from 12:00 PM — from competitions between the districts to live music and the grand fireworks display around 10:30 PM.
The updated program with band and schedule times will be published before the festival on saalburg-ebersdorf.de.
Free admission. Boat trip tickets, food, drinks, and carousel rides are paid for on-site.
