Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in St. Jürgen Church Heide
Heide is the district town of Dithmarschen in western Schleswig-Holstein. With around 22,000 inhabitants, it is the economic and cultural center of the west coast between Husum and Brunsbüttel. The townscape is dominated by the market square — one of the largest undeveloped market squares in Germany with 4.7 hectares — and the late Gothic St. Jürgen Church from the 15th century enthroned there.
The St. Jürgen Church on Heide's market square is an Evangelical Lutheran parish church with a three-aisled brick building and an organ, offering ideal conditions for classical concerts. With its warm acoustics and late Gothic architecture, it is one of the most atmospheric venues of the SHMF in Dithmarschen. Heide has been a permanent stop on the festival circuit since the 1990s — now with several concerts per season.
The SHMF was founded in 1986 by Justus Frantz and Leonard Bernstein and has since developed into one of Europe's most important classical music festivals. Every summer, between early July and late August, around 200 concerts take place at over 100 venues throughout the state — from Hamburg in the south to Sylt in the north. The festival brings world-class soloists, orchestras, and chamber music ensembles to Schleswig-Holstein and the Danish-North German border region.
The SHMF fulfills an important function in Heide: it brings top-class classical music to a rural region that would otherwise have less access to international musicians. For Dithmarschen's classical music fans, this means being able to experience concerts with world-class soloists without traveling to Lübeck or Hamburg — and for festival visitors from across the country, it opens up the charming market square of Heide with its cozy restaurants.
The SHMF 2026 runs from July 4th to August 30th and includes around 200 concerts at over 100 venues in Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, and the Danish-North German border region. The St. Jürgen Church on Heide's market square is one of the permanent venues in Dithmarschen. Several concerts are spread throughout the festival season — classical chamber music, solo recitals, organ music, and choral concerts with international artists.
The exact concert dates, programs, and artists for the St. Jürgen Church on Heide's market square will be announced by the SHMF in the annual program journal.
