On Germany's Largest Market Square

Heide is the district town of Dithmarschen in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, in the heart of the Dithmarschen marshland. Its most famous superlative: the Heider Marktplatz, with an area of 4.7 hectares, is considered the largest undeveloped market square in Germany. This vast area is the setting for the Heider Herbstmarkt — one of the largest autumn fairs in Northern Germany.

What awaits you

For six days, rides, market stalls, and food stands will be set up on the square. The offerings:

Six Days of Volksfest

The format runs significantly longer than the two-day spring fair — from Thursday to Tuesday. Thus, the Heider Herbstmarkt offers a special advantage: it perfectly captures the extended autumn holiday weekend and the bridging days in Schleswig-Holstein, attracting visitors from all over the north — from Husum via Brunsbüttel to Heide itself.

A Tradition with Identity

The organizer is Heide Stadtmarketing GmbH, a subsidiary of the town of Heide. The autumn fair is the second highlight of Heide's annual fair calendar, following the spring fair in March, and together with the central weekly market, it forms the social heart of the town center. The location — the huge market square — gives the fair its unique character: nowhere else in Germany does a fair take place on such a spacious area, framed by historic houses.
