Semi-final for the election of the German Wine Majesty with candidates from all German wine regions
The Preliminary Election for the German Wine Majesty is a key event in the annual calendar of German wine culture. On Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 3:45 PM, candidates from all 13 German wine regions will gather in the Stadthalle Saalbau Neustadt to qualify for the grand finale.
The German Wine Queen — officially known as "German Wine Majesty" today — is one of the most important ambassadors for German viticulture. For one year, she represents German wine both domestically and internationally, attends industry events, gives interviews, and supports German wine producers at trade fairs worldwide. The crowning of the respective Wine Queen has been a central event since 1949 and receives media attention far beyond the wine scene.
The organizer is the German Wine Institute (DWI), the marketing umbrella organization for German viticulture. The preliminary election in Neustadt is traditionally held a few days before the Grand Finale — the town of Neustadt an der Weinstraße, home to many Palatinate wine institutions and the venue for the German Wine Harvest Festival, is the historic location.
In the preliminary election, the 13 regional wine queens face an expert and personal assessment: competitive wine tasting with identification of grape varieties and origins, expert questions about German viticulture and its history, stage presence, and rhetorical skills. An expert jury of oenologists, sommeliers, journalists, and former Wine Queens will decide who advances to the grand finale on September 25, 2026.
For the participating candidates, the preliminary election is a nerve-wracking highlight after months of preparation. For the audience, it offers a unique opportunity to meet the next generation of German wine ambassadors and get a behind-the-scenes look at one of Germany's most important wine traditions.
The preliminary election on September 19, 2026, is the qualifying round for the Grand Finale one week later. The exact program for 2026 will be published by the German Wine Institute in the summer. The structure follows the proven choreography:
The event is part of the rich Palatinate festival culture, which attracts thousands of visitors to the Neustadt an der Weinstraße region every year. The combination of wine culture, Palatinate hospitality, and established festival traditions forms the unmistakable identity of this Palatinate festival institution.
