Hope & Landgren Open Air — new SHMF venue at Glücksburg Castle
With its 41st festival edition in 2026, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival is opening a new open-air venue: the castle park of Glücksburg Castle. The castle—one of Northern Germany's most famous Renaissance moated castles and the ancestral seat of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg—lies directly on the shores of the Flensburg Fjord. In the castle park, specially erected grandstands will be set up for the concert, with the castle itself serving as the visual backdrop for the stage. With 205 concerts at 120 venues across Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, Denmark, and Lower Saxony, the SHMF is one of Europe's largest classical music festivals; the concert in Glücksburg is a highlight of Summer 2026.
Star violinist Daniel Hope and Swedish jazz trombonist Nils Landgren performed together on an SHMF stage for the first time in 2023—an appearance that remains one of the festival's most electrifying moments in recent years. In 2026, the two will reunite in Glücksburg, this time with their regular ensemble comprising Jacques Ammon (piano), Stéphane Logerot (double bass), and Dimitri Monstein (percussion). Daniel Hope's brilliant violin sound meets Nils Landgren's unmistakable trombone, which sings, swings, and remains in motion.
The programme effortlessly bridges genre boundaries: Bach's Concerto in D minor and Dvořák's lyrical Sonatina are juxtaposed with songs by Sting, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, and James Taylor, interspersed with Nils Landgren's own compositions. The concert is presented in cooperation with JazzBaltica and supported by the initiative Wirtschaft & Musik.
Glücksburg (Ostsee), with around 6,000 inhabitants, is one of Schleswig-Holstein's smallest towns and is located directly on the German-Danish border on the shores of the Flensburg Fjord. Glücksburg Castle—built between 1582 and 1587—is considered one of Northern Europe's most significant Renaissance moated castles and today serves as a museum and a venue for public concerts. Administratively, Glücksburg belongs to the district of Schleswig-Flensburg. For SHMF visitors coming from Flensburg, it's only a 10-kilometre drive to the castle; from Kiel, it's about 90 kilometres.
With the open-air concert on July 27, 2026, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival will inaugurate Glücksburg Castle Park as a new venue. Against the backdrop of the famous white moated castle, the park will become an open-air stage, with the audience seated on specially erected grandstands.
Star violinist Daniel Hope and Swedish trombonist Nils Landgren performed together on an SHMF stage for the first time in 2023—in 2026, they continue this collaboration in Glücksburg. With their regular ensemble—Jacques Ammon (piano), Stéphane Logerot (double bass), Dimitri Monstein (percussion)—they combine classical music, jazz, and pop in a programme that disregards genre boundaries.
