The annual STEM festival for young solar tinkerers in Glücksburg
The Schleswig-Holstein Solarcup is more than a competition – it's an educational festival that makes the energy transition tangible for young people. It is organized by artefact gGmbH, a nationally recognized educational and energy competence center in Glücksburg, Schleswig-Flensburg district, Schleswig-Holstein. The venue – a "Power Park" with a wind turbine, solar installations, low-energy houses, and a 5-meter competition basin – is the ideal stage for an event where solar vehicles can be experienced in action.
Participants compete in several classes, categorized by age and discipline:
Beyond race results, design, presentation, and sustainability are evaluated — poster presentations and jury decisions complement the pure race times.
The Schleswig-Holstein Solarcup is a qualifying competition for the SolarMobil Germany National Final, which is held in a different German city each autumn (2026 in Dortmund, September 25–26). The winners of the individual classes from Glücksburg will represent Schleswig-Holstein there — making the SH Solarcup Northern Germany's most important junior solar preview.
Even though the competition is the main focus, the Solarcup is designed as a family festival: food trucks and organic snacks at the Power Park, hands-on stations for younger siblings, guided tours of the wind turbine and artefact's low-energy house, live commentary of the races, award ceremony in the late afternoon. Spectators are explicitly welcome and do not need to register.
For the 18th edition, artefact has chosen a new creative theme: solar-powered robot dinosaurs, preferably built from recycled materials. This class is aimed at the most imaginative teams and complements the classic racing classes with a strong design focus.
All classes run concurrently throughout the day, allowing teams to participate in multiple disciplines. Highlights include the solar boat regatta in the 5m basin in the morning and the final runs of the ultralight classes in the afternoon.
Supporting program: Organic snacks, guided tours of the low-energy house and wind turbine of artefact, hands-on stations for younger siblings. Winners qualify for the SolarMobil Germany National Final on September 25/26, 2026, in Dortmund.
