Traditional Whitsun Marksmen's Festival of the Kleinburgwedel Marksmen's Association of 1905
Kleinburgwedel, a district of the town of Burgwedel in the north of the Hanover region, has a long marksmen's tradition. The Schützenverein Kleinburgwedel von 1905 e.V. is the organizer of the annual Pfingstschützenfest (Whitsun Marksmen's Festival) — one of the social highlights of village life. For three days, the Schützenplatz on Burgstraße transforms into a festival mile that combines tradition, folk festival character, and club conviviality.
Founded in 1905, the Schützenverein Kleinburgwedel looks back on over 120 years of club history. Like most Lower Saxony marksmen's associations, it originated from the need to preserve tradition and community customs. The annual Schützenfest is the most visible expression of this tradition. The king's shooting, reception of the monarchs, festival parade, and coronation follow a sequence that has evolved over decades, while remaining open to social change and new program elements.
Friday evening marks the festive start. The festival grounds open at 3 PM, the gathering at the Schützenkrug begins at 6 PM, followed by the proclamation parade at 6:45 PM and the proclamation ceremony in the festival tent at 8 PM — accompanied by the brass band. Saturday is dedicated to competitions, receptions, and the first big dance evening. On Whitsun Sunday, the festival parade through the district culminates the program, followed by the coronation of the new monarchs and a king's ball. Throughout all three days, bumper cars, a carousel, and a shooting gallery offer folk festival fun.
What makes the Schützenfest Kleinburgwedel special, like so many festivals of its kind, is the combination of tradition and lived village community. The active marksmen, the clubs, the fire department, the music groups, and the volunteers from the community all contribute to the festival. For guests from the Burgwedel municipal area, the northern Hanover region, or neighboring marksmen's associations, the festival is a welcome opportunity to spend the Whitsun weekend in a relaxed atmosphere.
