Franconian Wine in Front of Schweinfurt's Town Hall
Since 2014, Schweinfurt's market square, with its magnificent Renaissance town hall and the Friedrich Rückert monument, has been the stage for the Schweinfurt Wine Festival every August. The event is organized by the association Schweinfurt erleben e.V. in collaboration with the Franconian Winegrowers' Association. Despite the city's industrial character — Schweinfurt is home to bearing manufacturers like Schaeffler and SKF — it's clear that this city on the Main is situated in the heart of the Franconian wine-growing region.
Three Wineries, Around 30 Wines
Unlike larger commercial wine festivals, the Schweinfurt Wine Festival deliberately focuses on three family wineries from the surrounding area: Weingut Gessner from Garstadt, Weingut Goger from Sand am Main, and the organically certified Weingut Ruppert from Hammelburg in the Saale valley. Together, they pour around 30 Franconian wines — Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Domina, and Rieslings in dry and noble sweet varieties. Those who want to taste Franconian wine directly from the classic Main slopes will find a focused selection here rather than a confusingly large offering.
Culinary and Musical Delights
The food stalls offer classic wine accompaniments: fish in various preparations, Flammkuchen, Bratwurst, alongside international classics like burgers, fries, or gyros. Every evening, bands and solo musicians perform on the market square stage — the musical spectrum ranges from soul to pop and rock. The official opening is traditionally performed by the Schweinfurt Wine Queen on Thursday evening at 6:30 PM.
Schweinfurt — Industry and Wine Culture
Schweinfurt, with its 54,000 inhabitants, is the center of the Bavarian district of Lower Franconia and lies on the Main river, at the transition between the Maindreieck (Main Triangle) and Mainviereck (Main Quadrilateral). The city center, with its market square, Altes Gymnasium, and St. John's Church, provides an atmospheric backdrop for the late-summer wine festival, which has become a firm fixture in the region's event calendar over eleven years.
