Open-air theatre at Vöhlinschloss
The Schwabenbühne Roth- und Illertal e.V. has been performing on the natural stage in the castle gardens of Vöhlinschloss in Illertissen (Neu-Ulm district) since 1981. The non-profit association is financed exclusively by admission fees and donations.
Theatre for all generations
Every year between July and September, the Schwabenbühne stages plays for adults as well as for young people and children on its open-air stage. Usually, there are two summer productions on the programme per season — one play for the whole family and one for an older audience.
Covered grandstand for 400 guests
A special feature is the covered grandstand: around 400 visitors stay dry even in summer rain — open-air theatre without weather risk. A winter production complements the programme during the winter months.
Illertissen — Theatre town in the Swabian foothills of the Alps
Illertissen is located in the district of Neu-Ulm, Bavaria, in the Bavarian-Swabian Iller valley. The Vöhlinschloss forms the historic backdrop for one of the established open-air theatres in Southern Germany.

The 2026 Summer Festival of the Schwabenbühne Roth- und Illertal takes place on the natural stage in the castle gardens of Vöhlinschloss Illertissen and consists of two productions.
»Sindbad the Little Sailor« (directed by Jörg Zenker) tells the story of a magic lamp with lost jewels that must be recovered to end a drought in Baghdad — the family play runs from 11 July to 1 August 2026 with nine performances. »Lysistrata« (directed by Stefan Krause), an adaptation of the classic Greek comedy about women striking for peace (recommended for ages 14 and up), follows from 14 to 29 August 2026 with eleven performances.
