Bielefeld's largest Schützenfest on Schützenberg — four days of Volksfest with the Schützengesellschaft des Amtes Heepen 1832
With around 50,000 inhabitants, Heepen is one of the largest districts of Bielefeld and is located in the northeast of the city. Until 1973, Heepen was an independent municipality (Amt Heepen) — and the village center has retained its charm to this day, with its own church, its own weekly market, and above all, a strong sense of community life. The cornerstone of social life is the Schützengesellschaft des Amtes Heepen e.V., founded in 1832 — today the largest shooting club in Bielefeld and the organizer of the city's largest Schützenfest.
The Schützengesellschaft des Amtes Heepen promotes its festival as "Bielefeld's largest Schützenfest" — a self-proclaimed title that can be measured by visitor numbers, festival tent size, and program scope. In fact, the Heepen Schützenfest attracts tens of thousands of visitors from all over Bielefeld and the surrounding Ostwestfalen region every year — a scale that is unmatched in the city.
The festival day starts early: from approx. 9:30 AM, the King's Shoot LIVE begins at the club's shooting range — the marksmen aim at the wooden bird, every shot is followed with anticipation, the tension builds until the new king (or queen) is proclaimed. Simultaneously, the Football World Cup Party takes place in the festival tent with live broadcasts of the World Cup matches on a big screen — a perfect combination of club tradition and sporting enthusiasm.
Saturday is marked by the Grand Tattoo — the military ceremony where music bands, drum corps, and the marksmen in full uniform perform the traditional march. Throughout the day, a large flea market with bric-a-brac, antiques, children's toys, and club stalls takes place on the Schützenberg grounds. In the evening, the Green'n'White Party Night begins — the shooting club's colors become the party motto, and the festival tent fills with DJ sets and dance music until late into the night.
Sunday is family day — and the day of the grand parade through Heepen: All marksmen of the Schützengesellschaft des Amtes Heepen march through the streets, accompanied by affiliated shooting clubs from all over Ostwestfalen, drum corps, music bands, decorated floats, and horse-drawn carriages. The king and queen are presented in special attire. Afterwards, the family afternoon follows in the festival tent with a children's program: bouncy castle, face painting, play bus, pony rides.
The festival concludes with the King's Shoot Finale for members who have not yet completed all disciplines in the previous days, and the traditional Closing Ball "Die Nachtigall tanzt" — a ball with a dance band, champagne reception, and the ceremonial farewell of the old and enthronement of the new club board. With "Die Nachtigall tanzt" (The Nightingale Dances), the Heepen Schützenfest has established its own poetic name for the closing evening, which is considered by insiders to be a symbol of the end of the festival season.
The Schützengesellschaft des Amtes Heepen was founded in 1832, making it one of the oldest shooting clubs in Ostwestfalen. Today, the club has several hundred members, its own shooting range, a youth department, and a women's department. The annual Schützenfest is not only the highlight of the club's year but also one of the most important major social events in northern Bielefeld.
