Advent magic in the Barbarossa city with Hesse's largest Advent wreath
Gelnhausen, the Barbarossa city in the Main-Kinzig district, is one of Hesse's most beautiful old town settings. Half-timbered houses, the Romanesque House, remnants of Barbarossa's Imperial Palace (12th century), and the historic Marienkirche church form the backdrop for one of East Hesse's most atmospheric Christmas markets.
The market traditionally takes place on the third Advent weekend. In 2026, this is from Thursday, December 10th, to Sunday, December 13th. The stalls are spread across Obermarkt and Untermarkt in the historic old town — both squares are within walking distance of each other.
The market's landmark: The Obermarkt fountain is decorated year after year into an oversized Advent wreath — one of Hesse's largest Advent wreaths. It has now become the "Wreath of Hope": Visitors can buy and hang Christmas tree baubles — the proceeds go to the Gelnhäuser Tafel (food bank).
Various music groups perform on Obermarkt and Untermarkt on all market days. The medieval folk group Laikan enchants visitors with dances, and on Sunday, a joint Christmas carol sing-along is on the program on Untermarkt. Children can ride the carousel or pet the llamas from Sonnenhof. Themed city tours starting at 4 p.m. (6 p.m. on opening day) reveal the city's Advent traditions.
Gelnhausen is located on the edge of the Spessart and is reachable from Frankfurt in 30 minutes by regional train (RE). For many Frankfurt commuters, the Gelnhäuser market is a relaxed alternative to the big tourist markets of the metropolis.
