Private gardens in Schortens and surrounding area open for visitors
The Friesland region has always been known for its charming private gardens. Cottage gardens with high boxwood borders, perennial beds with phlox and delphinium, shady paths under old fruit trees – the garden art of the North Germans is characterized by both pragmatism and a sense of beauty. With the Open Gardens days, the town of Schortens honors this heritage and makes it accessible to a broad audience.
The participating gardens range from classic cottage gardens and English-inspired perennial plantings to modern, nature-oriented retreats. Some owners open historic farmsteads, others showcase their small suburban paradises in just a few hundred square meters – an impressive testament to the fact that garden art depends not on size, but on dedication.
The focus of the event is conversation: owners chat about proven varieties, plant partnerships, and strategies against slugs; visitors exchange cuttings, advice, and inspiration. Some gardens offer coffee and cake, others small plant sales or concerts. An atmosphere of openness characterizes the day.
Schortens is located in the Friesland district between Jever and Wilhelmshaven. The participating gardens are spread throughout the town and surrounding districts. A map with all addresses will be published by the town of Schortens in good time and is available at the town hall. Exploring by bicycle is recommended – the flat landscape offers ideal conditions.
The 2026 edition follows the proven concept: private gardens open their gates, owners provide information about their plants, some offer coffee, cake, or small plant sales. Those who want to visit the entire region in one day should plan a bicycle tour with clear stages.
The event is part of a nationwide format that fits the region particularly well: garden art, sociability, and summer enjoyment come together.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the town of Schortens in spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
