Traditional Schützenfest with parade in the South Westphalian Siegerland region
Visiting the South Westphalian Siegerland region and want to see how a traditional Schützenfest (shooting festival) is celebrated in a medium-sized town in the low mountain range? Netphen offers the authentic experience. The Schützenverein Netphen 1927 e.V. — founded in 1927, as the club name suggests — maintains an almost hundred-year-old tradition that fills the entire town with festive spirit every year.
With nearly 100 years of history, the Schützenverein Netphen 1927 e.V. is one of the most traditional shooting clubs in the Siegen-Wittgenstein district. Several shooting companies, its own youth department, and an active women's section contribute to the club's life throughout the year. The highlight is the annual Schützenfest, which significantly shapes the town's identity.
The program follows the classic Siegerland Schützenfest pattern:
A special feature of Netphen: The marching band of the Netphen Volunteer Fire Department has been the musical accompaniment for all official city events for decades — Schützenfest, Carnival, civic festivals, Remembrance Day. The brass band maintains a classic repertoire of marches and folk songs and enjoys a great reputation far beyond Netphen.
Netphen is a medium-sized town in the Siegen-Wittgenstein district, in the South Westphalian Siegerland region, North Rhine-Westphalia, with around 23,000 inhabitants. The town is located north of Siegen, on the Netphe river (a tributary of the Sieg, which gave the town its name). Geographically characterized by the South Sauerland low mountain range, with dense forests, small reservoirs, and a distinct mining tradition. The Schützenfest is one of several civic festivals — there are also Schützenfeste in the districts of Deuz, Dreis-Tiefenbach, and others.
