Four days of Schützenfest by the St. Sebastianus Schützenbruderschaft of 1641 in the Düsseldorf district of Himmelgeist
The St. Sebastianus Schützenbruderschaft Himmelgeist of 1641 e.V. is one of the oldest shooting brotherhoods in the state capital Düsseldorf. With 385 years of history, it is among the oldest continuously active brotherhoods on the right bank of the Lower Rhine. Its annual Schützenfest in Düsseldorf-Himmelgeist is one of the central club dates and in 2026 will run for four days from Saturday, August 22nd to Tuesday, August 25th.
The Rhenish Schützenfest in Himmelgeist follows the classic four-day structure with characteristic Düsseldorf accents:
As a major Rhenish city, Düsseldorf has a particularly rich tradition of marksmen's guilds. The IGDS (Interessengemeinschaft Düsseldorfer Schützenvereine — Association of Düsseldorf Marksmen Clubs) connects the numerous district brotherhoods — Bilk, Niederkassel, Kaiserswerth, Oberkassel, Himmelgeist, and many others. Each district has its own Schützenfest, and the Himmelgeist version is among the most traditional in the city, featuring the characteristic Klompenball on Monday.
Himmelgeist is a district in District 9 (Garath/Hellerhof/Himmelgeist/Itter/Wersten) of the state capital Düsseldorf, located in the far south on the right bank of the Rhine opposite Neuss-Uedesheim. With its rural-suburban character, marshland, and the distinctive parish church of St. Nikolaus, the district preserves its own identity. The Schützenbruderschaft is one of the central institutions of the district, and the Schützenfest is the culmination of the year.
The Himmelgeist Schützenfest 2026 follows the classic Düsseldorf four-day schedule:
The complete daily program for 2026 (times, parade route) will be published by the brotherhood shortly before the date — via the IGDS events page or directly on the club's social media channels.
Parades and public events are free to attend. Admission to the festival tent in the evening (Klompenball, Coronation Ball) costs €10–€20. Food and drinks are available at club prices.
Himmelgeist is located in southern Düsseldorf, accessible by public transport via light rail lines U71 / U83 (Himmelgeister Brücke) and bus lines from District 9. By car: A46 or A57, exits Düsseldorf-Süd. Parking at the festival grounds will be indicated by the club.
Parades and public events are free to attend. Admission to the festival tent in the evening, Klompenball, and Coronation Ball requires a fee (usual Schützenfest admission prices €10–€20). Food and drinks are available at club prices.
The Klompenball on Monday evening is a Düsseldorf specialty that cannot be experienced everywhere in the Rhineland — a special tradition of dancing evenings. The Grand Tattoo on Coronation Ball Tuesday is the most spectacular program item.
