St. Sebastianus Schützenbruderschaft Himmelgeist — almost 400 years of tradition

The St. Sebastianus Schützenbruderschaft Himmelgeist of 1641 e.V. is one of the oldest shooting brotherhoods in the state capital Düsseldorf. With 385 years of history, it is among the oldest continuously active brotherhoods on the right bank of the Lower Rhine. Its annual Schützenfest in Düsseldorf-Himmelgeist is one of the central club dates and in 2026 will run for four days from Saturday, August 22nd to Tuesday, August 25th.

Four days of Schützenfest in Düsseldorf tradition

The Rhenish Schützenfest in Himmelgeist follows the classic four-day structure with characteristic Düsseldorf accents:

  • Saturday, August 22nd, 2026 — Kick-off: Assembly of the marksmen, opening of the festival tent, first program in the festival tent
  • Sunday, August 23rd, 2026 — High Festival: Festive high mass, grand parade with the King and his court through Himmelgeist, festival tent program
  • Monday, August 24th, 2026 — Klompenball: a Düsseldorf specialty, the Klompenball (clog dance) as a traditional evening of dancing
  • Tuesday, August 25th, 2026 — Coronation Ball and Grand Tattoo: Coronation of the new King and Queen 2026/2027, festive conclusion with the Grand Tattoo

Düsseldorf's marksmen tradition

As a major Rhenish city, Düsseldorf has a particularly rich tradition of marksmen's guilds. The IGDS (Interessengemeinschaft Düsseldorfer Schützenvereine — Association of Düsseldorf Marksmen Clubs) connects the numerous district brotherhoods — Bilk, Niederkassel, Kaiserswerth, Oberkassel, Himmelgeist, and many others. Each district has its own Schützenfest, and the Himmelgeist version is among the most traditional in the city, featuring the characteristic Klompenball on Monday.

Himmelgeist — Southern Düsseldorf District

Himmelgeist is a district in District 9 (Garath/Hellerhof/Himmelgeist/Itter/Wersten) of the state capital Düsseldorf, located in the far south on the right bank of the Rhine opposite Neuss-Uedesheim. With its rural-suburban character, marshland, and the distinctive parish church of St. Nikolaus, the district preserves its own identity. The Schützenbruderschaft is one of the central institutions of the district, and the Schützenfest is the culmination of the year.
