Estate tastings, cellar tours, and leisurely strolls around Burg Layen as part of the Nahe Season Opening
Weingut Schlossmühle Dr. Höfer in Burg Layen, a district of Rümmelsheim in the northern Nahe region, is participating in the Nahe Season Opening with a packed program of estate tastings, cellar tours, and vineyard walks. On Saturday and Sunday (April 18 and 19, 2026), the winery will be open from 2 PM to 7 PM, while on Thursday and Friday, leisurely strolls around Burg Layen will also take place starting at 4 PM.
Burg Layen is one of the most enchanting wine villages on the Nahe: its romantic location on the Trollbach below Burg Layen and its proximity to the red wine island formed by the local vineyards make this weekend the ideal occasion to discover this charming wine and castle village.
Weingut Schlossmühle Dr. Höfer is run according to family tradition and cultivates vineyards around Burg Layen, Dorsheim, and Rümmelsheim. The focus is on Riesling, Burgundy varieties, and elegant red wines. The historic Schlossmühle (castle mill) below Burg Layen is the winery's headquarters and houses a noteworthy vinotheque, a vaulted cellar, and a modern tasting facility. During the Season Opening, the winery opens these spaces to visitors.
The Schlossmühle's program comprises three main components. First: estate tastings, where current vintage wines can be sampled, from dry Riesling and Burgundy varieties to Spätburgunder. Second: tours through the historic cellar with explanations on winemaking, aging, and storage. Third: vineyard walks that allow visitors to experience the terroir of the vineyards around Burg Layen firsthand.
A special feature of the Season Opening are the leisurely strolls on Thursday and Friday starting at 4 PM. They lead from the winery through the Burg Layen district, past vineyards, half-timbered houses, and castle ruins. Stops with small wine tastings, farm taverns (Hofausschank) of other wineries, and culinary snacks punctuate the walks, creating a rich experience of enjoyment.
The district of Burg Layen belongs to the municipality of Rümmelsheim in the Verbandsgemeinde Langenlonsheim-Stromberg. It is named after Burg Layen, whose origins date back to the 13th century and which is now partially preserved and operated as a hotel and restaurant. The Trollbach Valley, with its vineyards, orchards, and beautiful landscape, makes Burg Layen the perfect destination for a wine-hiking day.
