Traditional autumn festival with Sunday shopping and beer festival
Even if the name sounds grim: The "Verler Tod" is one of the most colorful and popular folk festivals (Volksfeste) in East Westphalia-Lippe. For decades, the Verler Werbegemeinschaft (Verl Business Association) has transformed the city center of the East Westphalian small town into a lively festival mile on the fourth Sunday in October. In 2026, the festival falls on October 25 — with Sunday shopping from 1 PM to 6 PM.
While the city center shops open their doors, stands, food trucks, and market vendors create the right autumn festival atmosphere. Culinary stalls line Oesterwieher Straße, the market square, and the adjacent alleys: potato pancakes (Reibekuchen), bratwurst, tarte flambée (Flammkuchen), crêpes, and of course, seasonal Federweißer (young wine). Local gastronomy complements the offerings with special menus — perfect for celebrating Sunday shopping with family and friends.
New since 2025 and in its second edition in 2026: the Verl Beer Festival. Alongside the classic autumn festival, regional and supra-regional breweries present their specialties. From classic Pilsner from Westphalia and unfiltered cellar beers to modern craft beers with unusual flavors — the diversity shows how vibrant German beer culture is in the 21st century. Beer tastings, short talks with the brewmasters, and live music complete the offering.
The city of Verl in the Gütersloh district (North Rhine-Westphalia) has developed from a farming village into a prosperous medium-sized town in recent decades. It is known regionally primarily for SC Verl, which has risen to the 3rd Football League. The "Verler Tod" is as much a part of autumn in Verl as the potato pancake festival (Reibekuchenfest) is to the Rhineland — a family event cherished across generations.
Behind the festival is the Verler Werbegemeinschaft e.V., the association of local retailers and tradespeople. They not only organize the Verler Tod but also other annual event highlights — from the spring market to the Christmas market. The goal is to create "a balance between advertising effort, attractiveness for the public, and benefit for the business community."
The 2026 autumn festival runs all day Sunday in Verl's city center. Shops are open from 1 PM to 6 PM, while market and food stalls are ready from the morning. The 2nd Verl Beer Festival features regional and national breweries with tasting stands, short brewery talks, and a musical supporting program.
Free admission. Tastings and culinary stalls priced individually by the vendors.
Verl is located between Bielefeld and Gütersloh, with connections to the A2 (Gütersloh exit) and A33 motorways. Bus connections via VVOWL (lines from Gütersloh, Bielefeld, Rheda-Wiedenbrück). Parking around the city center — arrive early for the Verler Tod.
Admission to the autumn festival and beer festival is free. Tastings and culinary stalls are priced individually by the vendors.
The morning is more family-friendly; the city center fills up in the afternoon from 2 PM onwards. For the beer festival, it's worth planning a tasting tour with several small sample glasses.
