Bönen — Shooting Town in the Eastern Ruhr Area
Bönen is located in the Unna district on the eastern edge of the Ruhr area, east of Dortmund and west of Hamm. With around 18,000 inhabitants, the municipality is manageable — but it has a lively club life in which the Bürgerschützenverein Bönen e.V. (BSV for short) plays a central role. The Schützenfest is the annual highlight: three days of battalion roll call, shooting competitions, king's celebration, and festival ball on its own Schützenwiese.
Bürgerschützenverein Bönen — Club with its Own Facilities
The BSV Bönen has its own shooting facility with a clubhouse and festival meadow at Witheborgstraße 31. The shooting range is open all year round, shooting sports disciplines (air rifle, small-bore rifle) are practiced, and an active youth department carries club life into the next generation. The run-up to the Schützenfest includes meetings and shooting in the spring.
Shooting Year 2026 — Several Stages
The 2026 Schützenfest is embedded in a shooting year with several stages:
- May 31, 2026, from 5:00 PM — Meeting with bird auction (festive preparation for the shooting, auction of bird parts)
- June 6, 2026 — Children's Schützenfest on the Schützenwiese
- June 18–20, 2026 — Grand Schützenfest (Main Festival)
- July 26, 2026 — Accounting meeting and festival review
Three Days of Main Festival — Marquee, King's Shooting, and Ball
The actual Schützenfest runs from Thursday, June 18, to Saturday, June 20, 2026. The club communicates the weekend as “our Schützenfest(-ival) — three full days of program". Detailed program to follow — typically, the festival is divided into: Opening with battalion roll call, king's bird shooting with crowning of the royal couple, parade through Bönen, Grand Tattoo, and festival ball.
Children's Schützenfest — The Youngsters Take Center Stage
The Children's Schützenfest on June 6, 2026, is a conscious investment in the next generation. Children shoot at an age-appropriate bird effigy, and the children's royal couple is crowned — a relaxed, family-friendly version of the main festival. Followed by games, snack stands, and children's dance groups. Anyone with children who wants to experience the tradition should come on June 6 — it gets louder at the main festival later in the month.
Shooting Culture in the Unna District
Bönen is one of several shooting strongholds in the Unna district. Friendly clubs from Unna, Kamen, Lünen, Bergkamen, and Werne maintain a dense network of Schützenfests. In summer and early autumn, a Schützenfest takes place almost every week somewhere — a characteristic tradition for the part of Westphalia near the Ruhr area.
