September Civic Festival with Car Exhibition and Sunday Shopping
The Kronach City Festival is a typical Upper Franconian downtown festival – a festive atmosphere with live music and gastronomy combined with shopping opportunities and special promotions from local retailers. It is organized by the Aktionsgemeinschaft Kronach 1974 e.V., the marketing and interest association for Kronach's downtown businesses. The festival has established itself over the years as a central date in Kronach's September calendar.
The program consciously combines traditional civic festival elements with shopping and business offerings:
Kronach, with around 17,000 inhabitants, is the district capital of the Kronach district, located on the edge of the Franconian Forest in northeastern Upper Franconia. The town has an impressive historic city center with the Festung Rosenberg, one of Germany's largest preserved hilltop fortresses, as well as the medieval upper town with half-timbered houses and city walls. The city festival primarily uses the market square and the downtown axes around Kaulanger and Spitalplatz. Kronach is the birthplace of the Renaissance painter Lucas Cranach the Elder – a connection often referenced in special events.
The Aktionsgemeinschaft Kronach 1974 e.V. is an association of around 200 retailers, restaurateurs, craftspeople, and service providers in the city. It organizes not only the city festival but also the Historical City Spectacle in the summer, the Christmas market, and several other downtown events. This makes it one of the most active marketing associations in Upper Franconia.
The 2026 festival weekend follows the established two-day format: Saturday is dedicated to the classic civic festival with breakfast, live music, children's activities, and an evening program; Sunday focuses on Sunday shopping with a car exhibition and family activities.
The day begins at 10:30 AM with the Weißwurst breakfast – a traditional Bavarian starter with pretzels, sweet mustard, and Weißbier, accompanied by live music until 3:00 PM. In parallel, the fashion show featuring Kronach's fashion stores, the Children's City Rally, and the Children's flea market will take place. In the evening, there will be open-air concerts and gastronomy until 11:00 PM.
On Sunday, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM, the Sunday shopping event will take place: all downtown shops will be open. In parallel, the Kronach Auto Kilometer – local car dealerships will exhibit new and classic cars along a downtown street. Stage programs and gastronomy will continue throughout the festival.
Kronach Market Square and surrounding downtown streets. Kronach main train station is an 8-minute walk away. By car: B173 or B85, signposted parking lots on the outskirts of town. The downtown area will be closed to traffic during the city festival.
City festival is completely free. Food and drinks are charged per stall. The Kronach Auto Kilometer and fashion show are also free of charge.
