49th edition of the Tauberfranken Wine Festival at Unterschüpf moated castle with Büttenlauf and Umpfertallauf
When the marquee is set up behind the moated castle on the last weekend of August in Unterschüpf, the region between Bad Mergentheim, Tauberbischofsheim, and Würzburg enters Weintage mode. The Schüpfer Weintage is one of the most traditional Tauberfranken wine festivals and will celebrate its 49th edition from August 28th to 31st, 2026. The organizer is TSV Unterschüpf, and the festival is supported by Becksteiner Winzer and local Tauberfranken wineries.
The venue is the marquee located directly behind the Unterschüpf moated castle — a baroque water castle from the 17th century with a moat, situated in the middle of the village, lending the festival grounds an extraordinary backdrop. The marquee seats several hundred guests, featuring a stage, bar, and catering by TSV. Tauberfranken wines flow abundantly — Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner, Tauberschwarz, and Schwarzriesling from the surrounding wineries and Becksteiner Winzer.
What makes the Schüpfer Weintage unique are two sporting competitions that are not held anywhere else in this form:
Friday, August 28th — Opening: Marquee opening from 8 PM with beer tapping, live band, catering.
Saturday, August 29th — Festival Evening: Marquee from 6 PM with live music, Tauberfranken wines, cocktail bar.
Sunday, August 30th — Morning Pint + Büttenlauf: Morning pint with brass music from 10:15 AM. Büttenlauf in Mühlbergstraße at noon. Family program in the afternoon.
Monday, August 31st — Family Day + Umpfertallauf: Family Day from 2 PM with reduced prices, children's program, bouncy castle. Umpfertallauf in the late afternoon with award ceremony in the marquee.
One week before the wine festival, on Saturday, August 22nd, 2026, the official pre-tasting will take place — a smaller event where you can get to know this year's Tauberfranken wines before the main event. Program mainly for wine fans and regular guests.
Unterschüpf is a district of Boxberg in the Main-Tauber district, located in the Umpfer valley, a tributary of the Tauber River. The Tauberfranken wine region (one of Germany's northernmost wine-growing areas) stretches from Wertheim am Main via Tauberbischofsheim and Bad Mergentheim to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The wines are fresh, mineral, and among Franconia's most exciting varieties — especially the rare Tauberschwarz, an indigenous red wine variety that grows almost exclusively here.
Pre-tasting: Saturday, August 22nd, 2026.
By car via the A 81 motorway, Boxberg exit, then to Unterschüpf. By train to Lauda-Königshofen, then bus to Boxberg/Unterschüpf. Parking available at the festival grounds and in surrounding meadow parking lots.
Free. Tauberfranken wines 0.1 l from approx. €3. Food à la carte. Büttenlauf and Umpfertallauf with a small registration fee.
Fri Aug 28th from 8 PM, Sat Aug 29th from 6 PM, Sun Aug 30th from 10:15 AM, Mon Aug 31st from 2 PM.
