About Backofenfest Schreez
Backofenfest Schreez — edition 2026
The 2026 Backofenfest follows the tried-and-tested schedule: the festival begins in the morning with a church service, followed by a lunch buffet with Schäufele and Sauerbraten from the wood-fired oven, Franconian dumplings, sauerkraut, and a salad buffet.
In the afternoon, local youth dance groups will perform, accompanied by coffee and homemade cakes. From 5 PM, Flammkuchen will come out of the oven (also vegetarian and with fish options), served with Püttner beer on tap, Franconian wines, and non-alcoholic beverages. A festival tent provides shelter in case of rain, and a play area keeps the children entertained.

A Village Festival Centered Around the Oven
Unternschreez is a small district of the municipality of Haag in the Upper Franconian district of Bayreuth. In the middle of the village, directly in front of the community center, stands a historic wood-fired oven, which is only fully operated once a year: for the traditional Schreezer Backofenfest organized by the Fruit and Garden Association Schreez.
Franconian Cuisine from the Oven
The festival begins in the morning with a church service in the community center or in front of the oven. This is followed by the grand lunch buffet: crispy Schäufele (cured and baked pork shoulder) and Sauerbraten (marinated roast beef) directly from the wood-fired oven, served with Franconian dumplings, homemade sauerkraut, and a generous salad buffet. In the afternoon, the association members serve coffee and homemade cakes, while local youth dance groups perform on the decorated village square.
Flammkuchen in the Evening
From 5 PM, Flammkuchen (flatbread pizza) are baked in the oven – traditionally with bacon and onions, but also vegetarian and with fish options. This is accompanied by Püttner beer from the local brewery outlet, Franconian wines, and non-alcoholic beverages. A play area for children and a festival tent in case of rain make the event particularly family-friendly.
Tradition, Community Spirit, and Village Life
The Backofenfest is a prime example of Franconian club culture: the organizer is the Obst- und Gartenbauverein Schreez e.V. (Fruit and Garden Association Schreez), and preparations take weeks. The historic oven, an important piece of village identity, is maintained and kept in operation. The festival is a fixed date in the summer calendar for the municipality of Haag and attracts guests from Bayreuth, Creußen, and the entire Franconian Switzerland region.
