Traditional Kirchweih in the Jug Town of Creußen
The Creußener Kerwa is one of the most important traditions of the town of Creußen in the district of Bayreuth, Bavaria. Creußen is known as the 'Jug Town' – famous for its historic stoneware jugs, to which the Jug Museum is dedicated. The Kerwa combines this cultural heritage with Franconian festival customs.
The central venue is the Großer Zimmerplatz, which becomes an amusement park with rides and stalls for several days. Kerwa specialties are served in the town's restaurants throughout the entire Kerwa.
Kerwa Sunday begins with a festive church service in the town's parish church of St. Jakobus. Afterwards, the celebration continues at the Großer Zimmerplatz – for example, with catering by local clubs like TTC Creußen. The Jug Museum opens its doors, and the shops invite visitors for Sunday shopping.
Over the long weekend, the Creußener Kerwa combines conviviality, regional cuisine, and tradition. It is a firm meeting point for locals and a popular destination for visitors from the Bayreuth region and the Fränkische Schweiz.
The town of Creußen is scenically located between the Fränkische Schweiz and the Fichtelgebirge. A visit to the Kerwa can therefore be combined with an excursion into the surrounding nature and a visit to the Jug Museum.
The Creußener Kerwa 2026 is expected in the third week of September according to the established rhythm – presumably from Thursday, September 17, to Monday, September 21, 2026 (date to be confirmed by the town of Creußen). Previous years show a stable pattern: 2025 from September 18–22, 2024 from September 12–16, 2023 from September 14–18.
As usual, the Großer Zimmerplatz will become an amusement park, Kerwa specialties will be available in the restaurants, and on Kerwa Sunday, the program includes a festive church service in St. Jakobus, the open Jug Museum, and Sunday shopping.
Note: The exact program for 2026 will be announced by the town of Creußen shortly; the schedule outlined here is based on the documented pattern of previous years, without inventing specific program points.
