Historic Locomotives, Special Trains, and Family Programme at Bw Schöneweide
The Schöneweide Railway Depot (Bahnbetriebswerk) is one of the last surviving railway depots in the capital. Located in Niederschöneweide at Wagner-Régeny-Allee 9 in the Treptow-Köpenick district, it now houses a railway museum and an association that maintains and keeps steam and diesel locomotives operational. Once a year in September, the depot opens its large halls for the Railway Festival.
The historic vehicles are the centrepiece of the festival. More than 20 locomotives and wagons are on display on the premises: from Reichsbahn passenger trains to steam freight locomotives, from the express train locomotive 03 to the small railway steam locomotive Class 74 (built in 1916). You can view the machines up close, climb into the driver's cab, and book rides on a steam locomotive.
The Railway Festival is explicitly aimed at families with children. Staff explain the tasks of a train driver, show the forge, the maintenance hall, and the historic turntable. Model railway clubs present their layouts, small railway memorabilia can be purchased, and catering services round off the day.
Southern Berlin, including Schöneweide, Oberspree, and Eichgestell, has been a hub for Berlin's industry and its railway network since the late 19th century. The Schöneweide Railway Depot went into operation around 1906 and served numerous suburban connections and freight trains to Spindlersfeld, Grünau, and Silesia. The Railway Festival brings this history to life once a year.
The 21st edition of the Railway Festival at the Schöneweide Railway Depot will take place on the weekend of September 26–27, 2026. The railway depot at Wagner-Régeny-Allee 9 (Berlin-Niederschöneweide, Treptow-Köpenick district) will open its halls, workshops, and outdoor areas to the public.
Opening hours: Saturday 10 AM–6 PM, Sunday 10 AM–5 PM. Admission: Adults €12, Children up to 14 years €5. The highlight will be over 20 historic locomotives and wagons, as well as opportunities for rides on a steam locomotive.
