Grand Railway and Steam Locomotive Festival at the historic Schöneweide Railway Depot in Niederschöneweide
The Schöneweide Railway Depot in Niederschöneweide is one of Berlin's last largely preserved railway depots—with a roundhouse, turntable, workshops, and track systems that are still functional today. Since 1997, the association Dampflokfreunde Berlin e. V. has been working on the preservation of historic locomotives and wagons. The Berlin Railway Festivals are the annual public highlight of this work: two weekends a year when the railway depot opens its gates and showcases the workshops in action.
The focus is on historic vehicles maintained by the Steam Locomotive Friends: steam locomotives of series 03 (express train locomotive), 35 (Reichsbahn passenger train locomotive), 52 (war locomotive), and 74 (Prussian tank locomotive), as well as diesel locomotives and modern electric locomotives. More than 40 locomotives and wagons are presented in total. The highlight is the opportunity to sit in the driver's cab of a steam locomotive and watch the restoration of a steam locomotive from 1944 in the main hall.
The Railway Festival is more than an exhibition. A central program point is the opportunity to ride in the driver's cabs of diesel and steam locomotives on the premises—an experience that is rarely offered so directly. In the wagon hall, a model railway swap meet with dealers and collectors runs concurrently. For the youngest railway fans, a small field railway takes them on rides. A historic dining car restaurant and a beer garden round off the day.
The 21st edition of the autumn Railway Festival takes place on the weekend of September 26th/27th, 2026. Opening hours are Saturday 10:00 AM–6:00 PM and Sunday 10:00 AM–5:00 PM. Admission prices: Adults €12, Children (6–14) €5, Family (2 Adults + max. 4 Children) €30; children under 6 free. A second edition of the festival, the "Spring Railway Festival," runs in April.
For decades, Schöneweide was the industrial backbone of Berlin's southeast. Today, the district in the Treptow-Köpenick borough is undergoing structural change—between preserved industrial history and new creative and cultural industries. The railway depot in Wagner-Régeny-Allee is one of the defining testimonies of this industrial history, and the Railway Festival is one of its most visible manifestations—right in the heart of the state of Berlin.
A railway weekend in the classic sense: From September 26th to 27th, 2026, the Schöneweide Railway Depot opens its gates for the 21st edition of the Berlin Railway Festival. The Dampflokfreunde Berlin e. V. will showcase more than 40 locomotives and wagons in the roundhouses and on the outdoor tracks—from Prussian tank locomotives to Reichsbahn express train locomotives and the BR 52 war locomotive. Rides in the driver's cabs, a model railway swap meet, a children's field railway, and dining car catering form the usual weekend program. In April, the same railway depot already hosted its Spring Festival 2026.
