International concert series and music academy in a baroque country estate in the Haßberge Nature Park
Anyone exploring the Franconian rolling hills between Coburg and Bamberg will discover an architectural gem in the Weißenbrunn district of Ebern: Schloss Weißenbrunn, a privately owned baroque country estate that has been consistently developed as a concert and academy center for several years. The organizer is the Schloss Weißenbrunn Foundation, which operates one of Upper Franconia's most remarkable classical music initiatives here.
Schloss Weißenbrunn is located on the edge of Weißenbrunn, a district of the town of Ebern in the Haßberge district (Bavaria), in the middle of the Haßberge Nature Park. The region is known for its dense landscape of castles, Franconian vineyards, and tranquil hilly valleys — the ideal resonance space for a festival concept that focuses on concentration and authenticity.
The foundation combines three strands:
What distinguishes Weißenbrunn from other castle concert series is its original sound. Four historical fortepianos are available in the house: Brodmann (1827), Graf (1824), Broadwood (1829), and Pleyel (1836). Two are tuned in an unequal temperament typical of the period, two in a slightly tempered one — a collection that is unparalleled in Europe and allows listeners to experience songs by Schubert, Schumann, or Fanny Hensel in a sound world that corresponds to their time of origin.
The foundation has deliberately focused the format on enjoyment: many concert evenings are combined with regional culinary offerings — Franconian wines, small menus, conversations in the castle garden. The concert thus becomes an evening program in the truest sense of the word.
The 2026 season has been confirmed on the foundation's official website. Central event: the inaugural International Fanny Hensel Competition for Lied Duos with fortepiano. 49 duos had applied for eight final spots.
On April 25, 2026, two final concerts will take place at the castle at 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM; the audience will award a special prize online (livestream). The first prize (€8,500) was won by British baritone George Clark and German fortepianist Rachel Doubijanski. They and the other prize winners will perform their prize concerts at the castle and other partner venues in 2026.
Ebern is located about 25 km north of Bamberg and 30 km east of Coburg, in the Haßberge Nature Park. By car via the A 73 (exit Memmelsdorf or Coburg) and then via B 279. By train to Bamberg or Coburg, then by regional bus.
Tickets are available via okticket.de and via the website schloss-weissenbrunn.de. Prices vary depending on the concert; reduced rates for pupils and students.
The castle itself offers guest rooms ("Gästehaus Schloss Weißenbrunn"). Further hotels in Ebern and Bamberg.
