A Mill with Over 300 Years of History

The Alte Mühle Schladen was built in 1704, making it one of the oldest preserved mill structures in the district of Wolfenbüttel. Grain was milled here until 1957, after which milling operations ceased. Today, the building houses the Heimathaus Schladen, a museum facility of the local heritage association, displaying tools, furniture, photographs, and everyday objects from the region's history.

German Mill Day

German Mill Day takes place every year on Whit Monday. Hundreds of mills across Germany open their doors on this day, offering insights into their technology and history, and hosting festive programs. Schladen has regularly participated for years with its own festival program centered around the Alte Mühle.

Traditional Program

The program follows a proven mix of historical education and family-oriented entertainment. Knight games and archery evoke the medieval atmosphere of the region around the nearby imperial palace of Werla. Pony rides delight the youngest visitors, while arts and crafts and the tombola provide entertainment for adults. Catering is provided by the heritage association and cooperating vendors.

Heimatverein Schladen

Behind the mill festival stands the Heimatverein Schladen, which maintains the building, operates the museum, and organizes events. Mill Day, alongside Whit Monday at the Kaiserpfalz Werla, is one of the association's most important annual events and an example of how volunteer structures keep cultural heritage alive.
