City Open-Airs — Völklingen's Cultural Tradition Since 1999

The City Open-Airs are a success story. Since 1999, the Völklingen cultural association KulturGut e.V. has organized open-air concerts every Thursday in July and August in the Pfarrgarten of the Catholic parish church of St. Eligius — and all according to the wonderful principle of 'free and outdoors'. Over 1,000 visitors attend each evening, making the series one of Völklingen's most successful cultural events. Today, it is supported jointly by the City of Völklingen and GWIS Völklingen mbH.

Schlager as the Grand Finale

While the other Thursday dates in summer tend to feature rock, pop, jazz, or cover acts, the SchlagerNacht is the grand finale of the season — or a special event on a Friday or Saturday. In 2026, the SchlagerNacht is scheduled for Saturday, August 22, at 7:30 PM. The program thrives on the mix of Schlager classics and current hits — songs that invite you to sing along, dance, and sway. 'Pure Schlager feeling — atmosphere and goosebumps,' announces the City of Völklingen.

Pfarrgarten St. Eligius — The Perfect Setting

The Pfarrgarten is located in the center of Völklingen, right next to the St. Eligius parish church, in the shade of old trees. Summer evening ambiance, a permanently installed stage and bar area, paved floor — the ideal open-air setting in the middle of the city. In case of bad weather, the concert will be moved to the neighboring Pfarrheim (parish hall) or streamed — no firm reservations are necessary, but arriving early is recommended.

Völklingen — A UNESCO World Heritage City with Cultural Ambitions

Völklingen is one of the most important medium-sized cities in Saarland — but above all, it is home to the Völklingen Ironworks, the first UNESCO World Heritage site of the iron and steel industry. In recent decades, the city in the Saarbrücken regional association has undergone a cultural transformation: From a purely industrial city to a cultural city with the World Heritage site as a magnet, cinema screenings, theater, music events, and the City Open-Airs as a summer highlight.

Those who wish to support the concept can purchase drinks at the bar or register directly as a sponsor with KulturGut e.V. It is precisely this collaborative sponsorship that makes the event so sustainable — it has been growing continuously for 25 years.
