Crailsheim's May 1st Tradition
The Maifest by the water tower is one of Crailsheim's established May 1st traditions. Nowhere else in the city is spring custom so clearly combined with an unmistakable city symbol: the historic water tower in Spitalpark, a brick building from the late 19th century that rises above the park and has been a landmark of Crailsheim for generations.
Spitalpark as a Green Stage
Spitalpark is the largest park area in Crailsheim's city center—old trees, wide lawns, the water tower as a striking centerpiece. This mix makes the park the ideal stage for the Maifest: benches and tables are placed on the lawn, a small stage is set up, and local clubs set up their stalls. You sit in the spring sunshine, listen to brass band music, eat Maifest specialties, and enjoy the awakening of the city park from winter.
Spring Customs and Regional Specialties
The Maifest is a classic spring custom: Maypole raising on the eve, Maypole dance, Frühschoppen (morning pint) with brass band music, regional dishes like Maultaschen, Bratwurst, Maultaschen soup, Spätzle, salads, and of course, cake from the Landfrauen (farmers' wives). Accompanied by Hohenlohe beer, Württemberg wine, apple cider, and non-alcoholic drinks. The atmosphere is family-friendly and convivial—typically relaxed Hohenlohe style.
Crailsheim in the Schwäbisch Hall District
Crailsheim, with just under 36,000 inhabitants, is located in the east of the Schwäbisch Hall district, on the border with Bavaria and Middle Franconia. The city is known for the Crailsheim Merlins (Basketball Bundesliga) and the Fränkische Volksfest, the largest folk festival in Hohenlohe. The Maifest by the water tower is the quieter, more traditional spring kickoff—a Volksfest in miniature.
