Advent Kick-off in the Itterstadt

When the lights in Hilden's city centre are switched on on the first Sunday of Advent, 29 November 2026, the Christmas season begins for many in the Mettmann district. For years, the Weihnachtsmarkt Hilden has been the joint launch event organised by the city administration, city management, and an alliance of Hilden associations, who are involved at the stalls. Unlike the large markets in Düsseldorf or Cologne, Hilden remains manageable, walkable, and neighbourly – a market where people know each other.

Mittelstraße in a Glow of Lights

The venue is Mittelstraße, Hilden's central shopping street, complemented by adjacent squares in the pedestrian zone. Wooden stalls decorated with fir branches and warm lights line the historic rows of houses. Glühwein, Feuerzangenbowle, Reibekuchen, gebrannte Mandeln, Bratwurst – the culinary offerings follow the Rhenish Christmas market tradition. In addition, associations, schools, and charitable initiatives present their work and collect donations for local projects.

Sunday Shopping

A special feature of Hilden's kick-off event: the Christmas market coincides with a Sunday shopping event. The city centre shops open their doors on 29 November 2026, allowing you to combine your Advent shopping with a stroll through the market. The Hilden City Management coordinates the interplay between retail, gastronomy, and market stalls.

Family Programme and Musical Accompaniment

For children, there is traditionally a children's carousel, craft activities, and an appearance by St. Nicholas. Choirs and brass ensembles from Hilden's music associations perform on a small stage. The Hilden city marketing deliberately keeps the atmosphere family-oriented – not a large-scale market, but a "we celebrate together" format.

Hilden is located between Düsseldorf and Solingen in the Mettmann district, easily accessible via the A3 and A46 motorways, as well as by S-Bahn line S1 (Hilden or Hilden Süd) and regional train. From the Hilden S-Bahn station, it's about a 700-meter walk to Mittelstraße. Those arriving by car should best use the car parks on Schwanenstraße and Warrington-Platz.
