A City Shines in Spring
Grabow is located in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district on the Elde, a tributary of the Elbe. With around 6,000 inhabitants, the town is manageable but proud of its over 775-year history as an Elde town. The Grabow Festival of Lights is the annual civic event with which the town symbolically bids farewell to winter and welcomes spring. It traditionally takes place on a Friday at the end of March and attracts visitors from all over southern Mecklenburg, the Wendland region, and Hamburg.
Concept and Atmosphere
The core of the festival is the light installation: the historic city center — market square, Kirchenplatz in front of St. Georg, Pferdemarkt, and Große Straße — is festively illuminated with hundreds of lights, fairy lights, ground spotlights, illuminated sculptures, and light projections. Building facades are illuminated, clubs decorate their stalls with light installations, and children carry lanterns through the streets. The opening is at precisely 6 PM by the mayor on the market square.
The Program
Various program points are spread throughout the historic old town:
- Market Square — Main stage with opening at 6:00 PM, performance by the »Dance Kids« at 7 PM, from 8 PM DJ sets (Valuev, Miquel, Philo), fire show at 10:45 PM as the pyrotechnic highlight
- Kirchenplatz — Live music by Mathias Fischer (singer-songwriter)
- Pferdemarkt — Youth stage with background music
- St. Georg Church — Own program with concerts and light projections
- Große Straße — Surprise performances and street artists
- Museum — from 6 PM hands-on activity »Paint a Pennant« for the 775th city anniversary
- Cinema — historical lecture by Stephan Heinsius at 6 PM
- All Day — Walk acts and stilt walkers roam the city center, carousel for children
Significance for Grabow
The Festival of Lights is the town's most important spring event — comparable in its identity-forming function to the town festival in summer (with the town festival and Martinimarkt in November). The organizer is the town of Grabow in close cooperation with the local business association, clubs, and the St. Georg parish.

Festival of Lights 2026 — Grabow Shines for the 775th City Anniversary
The 2026 edition coincides with Grabow's 775th city anniversary. The town is using this special occasion to offer a hands-on activity about city history in the museum — visitors can paint pennants, which will later become part of the anniversary decorations. In the cinema, Stephan Heinsius will give a historical lecture on the city's history.
The rest of the program follows the proven format: stage program on the market square, live music on Kirchenplatz and Pferdemarkt, walking acts and stilt walkers in the streets, DJ sets late in the evening, and the fire show at 10:45 PM as the highlight.

Program Friday, March 27th, 2026
- 6:00 PM — Opening on the market square by Mayor Kathleen Bartels, simultaneous opening of the »Paint a Pennant« activity in the museum, historical lecture by Stephan Heinsius in the cinema
- 6:00 PM – 11:00 PM — Light installation activated throughout the city center. Live music on Kirchenplatz (Mathias Fischer), youth stage on Pferdemarkt, walking acts and stilt walkers all day on Große Straße
- 7:00 PM — »Dance Kids« performance on the main stage at the market square
- 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM — DJ sets on the market square with Valuev, Miquel, and Philo
- 10:45 PM — Fire show on the market square as the highlight

Getting There
Grabow is located in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, approx. 60 km west of Schwerin. By car via the A24 (Grabow exit) and the B5. By train (RE/IC) to Grabow station. The historic city center is within walking distance of the station.
