Traditional market since 1777 in Crailsheim's Lange Straße — Wednesday, Thursday, Friday after Pentecost
The Mooswiesenmarkt (also called Mooswiesenmesse) is one of Hohenlohe's oldest continuously celebrated market traditions. Its origins date back to 1777: Margrave Karl Alexander of Brandenburg-Ansbach granted the town of Crailsheim the privilege of holding a multi-day market after Pentecost. Since then, the market has been celebrated unchanged on the Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday after Pentecost — from May 27 to 29 in 2026. The name “Mooswiesen” (moss meadows) refers to the original location choice on a mossy meadow outside the town walls; today, the market takes place in the town center on Lange Straße.
The market's assortment is classically traditional and differs from modern consumer markets: textiles (socks, underwear, sweaters), fashion accessories (scarves, bags, jewelry), garden supplies (tools, plants, seeds), building materials (screws, fittings, small tools), sweets, leather goods, and household goods. The up to 25 traders come from all over Southern Germany — many family businesses have been part of the Mooswiesen tradition for generations.
In front of the Liebfrauenkapelle in the middle of Lange Straße, the traditional children's carousel stands — a simple, classic carousel that many Crailsheim parents and grandparents visited as children themselves. Next to it are various culinary stands: the traditional Mooswiesen-Wurstkessel, bratwurst, crepes, sweets, and regional specialties. Catering by local associations complements the offerings — Crailsheim beer, Trollinger, and Lemberger from nearby Württemberg.
Crailsheim (around 35,000 inhabitants, Schwäbisch Hall district, AGS 08127) is a central town for eastern Hohenlohe. The town, located at the transition from Württemberg Franconia to the Hohenlohe plain, is known for its equestrian sports (Franconian Volksfest with horse races), its historically rich city center with St. John's Church and the Liebfrauenkapelle, and the Crailsheim Merlins (BBL basketball club). Besides the Franconian Volksfest, the Mooswiesenmarkt is the second major market event of the year.
The 2026 edition continues a nearly 250-year-old tradition. Exactly in the week after Pentecost — on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday — Lange Straße becomes a market mile with traders from Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, and the Palatinate. As has been customary for generations, the market offers goods that have become rare in classic retail — and that's precisely its appeal.
Pentecost 2026 falls on Sunday, May 24; accordingly, the Mooswiesenmarkt starts on Wednesday, May 27. The children's carousel in front of the Liebfrauenkapelle and the Mooswiesen-Wurstkessel are the intergenerational hallmarks.
Free admission to the market mile. Goods at market prices — many traders offer attractive market rates below retail prices. Food and carousel rides at market-standard prices.
