One of Germany's most beautiful Christmas markets in the UNESCO World Heritage ensemble in front of Trier Cathedral
The Trier Christmas Market, in its current form, dates back to the early 1980s and has since been one of the most traditional Advent markets in Germany. The setting is the historic heart of Trier: the medieval Hauptmarkt with its magnificent burgher houses, the Petrusbrunnen (St. Peter's Fountain), and the Steipe, as well as the adjacent Domfreihof at the foot of Trier Cathedral, which, together with the Church of Our Lady, is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Around 100 wooden sales stalls are arranged according to a well-established market order. The assortment deliberately remains traditional: handmade nativity figures, glassblowing art from the Hunsrück region, carved wooden toys, regional specialties from the Mosel and Eifel regions, along with fir branches, wax candles, and Christmas tree decorations. Culinary highlights include bratwurst, potato pancakes (Reibekuchen), tarte flambée (Flammkuchen), candied almonds, and, of course, the famous Trier mulled wine, also offered in a version made with Mosel wine.
The daily stage program on the Hauptmarkt combines contemplative brass music with choirs, trombone concerts, and performances by regional music associations. The Weihnachtsmann (Santa Claus) regularly appears from the window of the Steipe to give gifts to children. The illuminated Ferris wheel on the Domfreihof is also a permanent fixture, offering an unparalleled view of the nightly illuminated cathedral.
The market is integrated into the entire Advent season in Trier: nativity scene exhibitions, concerts in the cathedral, guided tours of the UNESCO World Heritage sites, and late-night shopping on Sundays in the city center create an overall experience that makes the city one of the most sought-after destinations for Christmas market visitors in Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, and France.
The 2026 edition coincides with the World Heritage anniversary year "40 Years of UNESCO World Heritage Trier." Accordingly, ttm GmbH is placing a stronger thematic focus on conveying the historical heritage: special guided tours link the Christmas market with the Cathedral, the Church of Our Lady, the Basilica of Constantine, and the Imperial Roman Baths.
On the main stage at the Steipe, guests can expect a dense musical program featuring choirs, brass ensembles, children's choirs, and concerts by regional music associations. On the Domfreihof, the large Ferris wheel will once again offer views of the nightly illuminated cathedral. Nativity scene enthusiasts can visit the monumental nativity scene in the Cathedral and the nativity scene exhibitions in the city center.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring and summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
Opening Hours: Sunday to Thursday usually 10:30 AM to 9:00 PM, Friday and Saturday until 9:30 PM. Closed on Totensonntag (Day of Remembrance, November 22, 2026). Shortened opening hours on Christmas Eve.
