Münster — University City in Westphalia
Münster, with around 320,000 inhabitants, is the largest city in the Münsterland region and the seat of the administrative district. It combines university life, church heritage, and Westphalian civic flair. The cityscape is characterized by St. Paul's Cathedral, the Prinzipalmarkt with its arcaded buildings, the Aasee lake, and the Überwasserkirche (officially Liebfrauen-Überwasser) — a 14th-century Gothic hall church that gives the city one of its most striking towers. The Überwasserkirchplatz in front of it is a vibrant meeting point between the palace district and the city center.
Trixi Bannert and Münster's Wine Trade
The wine festival is organized by the wine merchant Trixi Bannert, known in Münster for its curated selection from German and international wineries. The concept is clear: not a mass event with discount packages, but an open tasting featuring top wineries — Riesling from the Mosel and Rheingau, Spätburgunder from Pfalz and Baden, Grauburgunder from Württemberg, as well as wines from Italy (Tuscany, Piedmont), France (Burgundy, Bordeaux), Austria (Wachau), and Spain (Rioja, Ribera).
Three Days with Different Rhythms
The wine festival runs from Friday to Sunday. Friday begins in the late afternoon — after-work crowds, students, and after-work guests fill the square. Saturday is the main festival day: lunchtime crowds, families with children (at the edges), afternoon strollers stopping by, evening wine atmosphere until late at night. Sunday is quieter — a day for connoisseurs with lunchtime crowds, families, and Sunday excursionists.
Stalls, Snacks, and Standing Tables
Each stall offers tasting glasses (typically 0.1 l) and full glasses (0.2 l) at various prices. Alongside, there's a culinary selection: cheese platters, antipasti, tarte flambée, spreads, charcuterie, chocolate pralines — all curated to complement the wines. Standing tables and seating are distributed across the square; the atmosphere of the city center with the church and houses as a backdrop is part of the charm.
Atmosphere in front of the Überwasserkirche
The Überwasserkirche is one of Münster's three major Gothic churches (alongside the Cathedral and St. Lambert's Church) and shapes the cityscape with its 78m high tower. The square in front is usually a quiet passage from the palace district to the city center — during the wine festival, it becomes a lively meeting point for three days with fairy lights in the evening, standing tables, and a convivial atmosphere. Those unfamiliar with Münster can get to know the city in a unique way here.
Summer Excursion to Münster
Late August is a good time for Münster: the university is still in its break between semesters, but city life is active. Visitors to the wine festival can combine it with day trips to the Prinzipalmarkt (5 min. walk), the Palace (3 min.), the Aasee lake (10 min. by bike), and the Promenade (the green ring around the old town). Münster is the ultimate cycling city — a tour with a rental bike is a must.
