Oldest and largest of the six Münster Christmas markets — around one million visitors under the town hall gable
Münster celebrates the Advent season with no fewer than six independent Christmas markets, all taking place simultaneously in the historic city center and merging into a cohesive experience. The oldest and largest among them is the Christmas Market around the Historic Town Hall — and it is one of the most visited in all of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Münster's Historic Town Hall is an architectural icon: a Gothic civic architecture from the 14th century with the famous Hall of Peace, where the Peace of Westphalia was negotiated in 1648. The adjacent Prinzipalmarkt with its historic townhouses and arcades is one of the most beautiful market streets in Germany. In Advent, this setting becomes an oversized festive backdrop: a warm canopy of lights over the arcades, illuminated gables, dense rows of festively decorated stalls.
About 90 lovingly decorated stalls make up the market. The mix is deliberately curated:
This weighting is the response to Münster's self-image: quality should triumph over quantity, arts and crafts over sausage stands. It works — Münster is established as a Christmas market destination.
The annual attendance is around one million visitors over the approximately four weeks of the market — a remarkable number for a city of 320,000 inhabitants. A significant portion comes from the neighboring Netherlands and Belgium — the market is popular across borders.
A tradition: The central mulled wine stand directly in front of the town hall gable. Students, visitors from out of town, and families from all over the Münsterland region meet here — and the mulled wine is made with real wine, not from a plastic barrel. The mugs are available as collector's items with the year's motif.
The city of Münster already reports high booking volumes for hotels in 2026 — the market has become a firm Advent destination for tour groups from the Netherlands, Belgium, and Great Britain. Those planning to visit on a weekend should book well in advance.
Münster is not a big-city Christmas market that gets lost in anonymity — nor is it a small-town market with three stalls. It's exactly in between: a city with a clear historical identity, with city center architecture that glows in the lights, and with six interconnected markets that together make one of the most beautiful Advent excursions in NRW.
The Town Hall Market is just one of six interconnected markets in the city center — all within walking distance of each other.
