Traditional annual market with a Volksfest (public festival) around the feast day of Saint Michael
The Schwabmünchner Michaelimarkt with Volksfest is a classic Swabian patronal festival celebrated around the feast day of Archangel Saint Michael (September 29th). The combination of a religious patronal feast and a secular annual market has a long tradition in Swabia: both have been intertwined for centuries, complementing each other and attracting visitors from the entire region.
On the three market days — typically Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday — over 120 market traders set up along a route of more than a kilometer through the city center: Garten-, Holzhey-, and Museumstraße become a continuous market mile. The assortment ranges from household goods, textiles, shoes, and sweets to crafts, antiques, and seasonal products. Market hours are 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. A true Swabian market mile, broad and well-frequented.
Parallel to the market, the actual Volksfest takes place on the Holzheystraße fairgrounds. Over 20 showmen with rides, carousels, shooting galleries, and lottery stalls characterize the scene. The Binswanger festival hosts — a traditional Augsburg family in the Volksfest business — operate the beer tent with live bands and provide culinary delights with classics: roast chicken, pork knuckle, grilled fish, and liters of beer.
A highlight is the parade on the opening evening: around 500 members of local clubs march in traditional costumes and uniforms from the city center to the fairgrounds, accompanied by three bands. The format is clearly inspired by the Munich Wiesn — a Swabian mini-version, but with the same festive solemnity. This is followed by the traditional tapping of the beer keg in the festival tent.
The weekend offers additional program items: puppet theater performances by TSV Schwabmünchen at the Lech-Wertach-Testzentrum, Market Sunday with a festive church service at 9:00 AM and shops open from 12:30 PM to 5:30 PM, as well as a classic car exhibition on Fuggerstraße. This transforms the city center into a complete festival zone — not just a market, but an integrated city experience.
Schwabmünchen is a medium-sized town in the Augsburg district, located southwest of Augsburg on the Wertach river. With around 14,000 inhabitants, the town has preserved its own identity and has not become a suburb of Augsburg. The Michaelimarkt with Volksfest is the most important major autumn event in the city — and the best occasion to experience Swabian city life in its traditional form.
The Michaelimarkt Volksfest 2026 in Schwabmünchen follows its traditional rhythm. The Volksfest on the fairgrounds begins on Thursday, and the market unfolds over the weekend through the city center streets.
The Binswanger festival hosts are again taking over the beer tent — a guarantee of upscale Volksfest catering. Top bands provide the musical accompaniment, and the parade brings the town's club life visibly together.
