Grand Town Festival for the 750th City Anniversary with History, Live Music, and Craft Market
Wolfstein was first mentioned in a document in the year 1275 and celebrates its 750th city anniversary in 2026. In the Middle Ages, the town belonged to the County of Veldenz and later to the Duchy of Palatinate-Zweibrücken. The Wolfstein Castle, of which only remnants remain today on the Königsberg, shaped the town for centuries. In the 19th century, Wolfstein benefited from the railway connection via the Lautertalbahn. Today, Wolfstein is the center of the eponymous Verbandsgemeinde Lauterecken-Wolfstein and the location of the SommerMusikFest, one of Germany's most renowned workshop festivals.
The Town Festival for the 750th Anniversary is not the usual biennial Wolfstein town festival, but an expanded special program. The festival committee, the town, and numerous associations have been working for years on the organization of this unique festival weekend. From Friday, August 22nd, to Sunday, August 24th, 2026, the town center around Rathausplatz and Wassergasse will unfold a program that combines seven hundred and fifty years of history with vibrant present.
Several thematic areas are planned: A main stage with live music of all genres, from folk music, pop, and rock to Schlager and dialect acts. A craft market with a historical focus, showcasing the old professions of the Palatinate. Historical reenactments and exhibitions that bring important stages of the town's history to life. Museum tours in the historical museum and city tours through the old town. On Family Sunday, a dedicated children's and family program. And a special focus: the encounter with guests from the French twin town, who will arrive with their own delegation, music group, and specialty food stand.
The anniversary festival is largely supported by Wolfstein's associations, the town administration, and dedicated citizens. Volunteer commitment, the close connection to the town's history, and the joy of celebrating together shape the character of the weekend. Thousands of visitors are expected from the Verbandsgemeinde, the Kusel district, the neighboring Donnersbergkreis, and from the twin town in France.
The 2026 edition marks the historical highlight of the anniversary year. The town of Wolfstein and the festival committee have been preparing an extensive program for several years, bringing the town's history from its first mention in 1275 to the present day to life. The festival weekend is the central public event of the anniversary year, complemented by numerous cultural and social events spread throughout the calendar year.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the festival committee on wolfstein-750.de. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years and will be expanded with the special program for the 750th anniversary:
