736 years of Volksfest tradition in Tengen — one of Southern Germany's oldest folk festivals with 100,000 visitors
The Tengen Schätzele-Markt is one of the oldest folk festivals in Southern Germany. Its roots reach back to the 13th century (first documented mention around 1290) — 2026 marks the 736th edition. The market is organized by the City of Tengen in close cooperation with the Tengen Trade Association and the Tengen City Band. During the four festival days, the entire town — market square, main street, festival grounds — transforms into a single folk festival area.
The Schätzele-Markt is divided into several areas:
• Market — Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM, traditional stalls and sales with hundreds of vendors.
• Trade Exhibition — Presentation of companies from Tengen and the surrounding area in a dedicated exhibition hall.
• Funfair — Carousels, roller coasters, shooting galleries, candy stalls.
• Festival Tent — Catering, music, dance evenings with live bands.
• Car Exhibition in front of the town hall.
• Business Rally — Saturday afternoon with prominent speakers from business and politics.
In clear autumn weather, the market is a family event for the entire region.
Tengen (Konstanz district, AGS 08335, around 4,800 inhabitants) is located in Hegau in southwestern Baden-Württemberg, near the Swiss border. The town is also called the "Little Tuscany" due to its mild climate and charming hilly landscape. The landmark is the ruined Tengen Castle above the old town. The town was the seat of the Counts of Tengen in the Middle Ages — and the Schätzele-Markt dates back to that era.
From Friday, October 23rd, to Monday, October 26th, 2026, Tengen celebrates the 736th edition of the Schätzele-Markt. A festival tradition dating back to the 13th century, it attracts over 100,000 visitors each year from Hegau, western Lake Constance, and nearby Switzerland to the small Hegau town.
Highlights include the large festival tent with music and catering (live bands, dancing, catering with Hegau specialties), the trade exhibition of Tengen businesses, the two-day market (Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM), the funfair with carousels and roller coasters, and the car exhibition in front of the town hall. On Saturday afternoon, the traditional Business Rally takes place — a mix of discussion forum and folk festival with prominent speakers from business and politics.
